My husband I recently attended a conference at the resort. O-M-G...by Western standards, this place is a dump. Sorry to be so blunt, but there it is. Our bed -- a rock. My bottom got sore while I sat on it reading a book! They provide a separate tap for drinking water in the bathroom, which makes me REALLY not want to brush my teeth using the regular tap water. The hairdryer is one of those '60's things when women wore curlers and a cap on their head. Internet didn't work in our room. The bed and carpet just made me cringe and the whole place smelled like smoke. The concierge did not speak English, which isn't helpful, and if you want to catch a cab to Beijing (a hour's ride, at least), expect to be overcharged (anywhere from 150 to 200 RMB, with 180 being average). They know you're trapped at the resort and they'll make you pay, literally. After seeing this hotel room (we couldn't even bear to sleep there!), we ended up keeping the room we were already in at the Hilton Beijing Wangfujing, and my husband took the subway and 20-min cab ride to the resort each day (2 RMB for subway and about 30 RMB for cab and it was faster than taking a taxi from downtown as you're going against traffic). He used the hotel room at the resort as a "staging" and storage location for his stuff, and I killed time there waiting for his sessions to end.
I know folks may be directed to the resort hotel because of a conference, but I strongly suggest getting a nice hotel in Beijing near the #5 subway line and just go north to the end of the line each morning. The subway is a breeze, there are plenty of cabs at the station, and the subway should be pretty empty as you're going the opposite direction of other commuters. It's cheaper and you'll be able to go out at night in Beijing each evening when your day ends without battling traffic or paying a king's ransom to return to the resort.
