Coming off of a relatively stellar experience with other Crowne Plazas in Asia, my experience with the CP Wangfujing was, well, average.
InterContinental Hotels Group has a plethora of hotels around Beijing and this one seemed the best suited for sightseeing in/around Tienanmen Square/Forbidden City on my two night stay as well as shopping as this property is located along Wangfujing Street. Indeed, the location worked great for me compared to my last visit to Beijing (where I stayed at the InterContinental Beichen) as I was able to cover a lot more ground on this visit.
Aside from that, the hotel itself didn't seem too impressive. I agree that the place seems a tad bit dated and could go for another touch-up. The property seems like it only upgrades the rooms for Priority Club Platinums by a single category, of which in this case I booked a premier room and managed to receive an upgrade to a deluxe with a view of Waifunjing Street. Unfortunately the upgrade did not include club lounge access (of which such a benefit has been a hit-and-miss in my experience as a Platinum with CPs in Asia) but was delivered a fruit plate and a free bottle of water at the bar as Platinum recognition.
The room itself is starting to show some wear and tear but otherwise was clean. Soundproofing between the rooms didn't seem sufficient enough, either that or my neighbors were stirring up quite a mess next door while I was attempting an afternoon nap! One thing that I appreciated was that there were four small complimentary bottles of water (two in the bathroom and two in the desk (there are also two larger name brand water bottles that I noticed next to the TV, those were NOT free).
I found the breakfast buffet sufficient, though it was included in my rate and I couldn't imagine paying for it outright unless I was waking up from a serious case of the munchies!
While the hotel may not be too spectacular, I found the staff themselves excellent and very accommodating to requests! Managed to check-in early (though I don't know if Priority Club status might've helped in this) and the concierge desk was very helpful whenever I came up to them, whether it be requesting stamps for my stack of postcards to getting directions to the Forbidden City.
Yes, there are a lot of IHG hotels around the city, but if you're on willing to forgo being "wowed" by the property itself but want to hit up the sights in a quick visit, then this may work out for you!
