My fiancee and I stayed at this wonderful hotel for three weeks In October 2013, during our first week the hotel kept our room open whilst we went off for a 5 day safari booked through JT (Julius Tact) Safaris with Julius Nzumbi which was fantastic and their small office is opposite the hotel but their new head office is next to Diani Sea Resort.
From the beginning of our stay at Palm Beach the staff couldn't do enough for us, we were treated like royalty and nothing was too much trouble if we asked for something. The staff at reception were friendly and assisted us when ever we had a question about changing money, how to work the air con etc. Our room (717) was ground floor and was just far enough from the pool and bar to be quiet if we had an early night, but not too far to make it a trek in the morning to breakfast. The cleaner Safari was brilliant, and always stopped to speak to us when ever we saw him, the room was spotless everyday. Rooms are in fours, 2 up 2 down in a block. Comfortable huge bed with net around it, double sinks and large shower in the bathroom. Red wine and fruit was provided upon our arrival to our room which was nice. Coathangers provided in the large wardrobe, and a large safe big enough to fit our A4 document holder in. Wifi is free and was good at the reception and bar area, in our room it kept dropping out, but was good enough to pick up emails and send photos. Who wants to be on the internet all holiday anyway???
The restaurant was always very clean and the staff played drums and danced to announce when lunchtime began, which was always entertaining. The food was fantastic, very varied and we didn't get bored of the food at all. All of the chefs (Stephen, Fred, Vincent) at the various grills and pasta / omelette station where fantastic and always very friendly and chatty whilst cooking the food to your liking, the dessert chef was excellent and always told us what went in to the puddings which was great. Dining whilst looking out over the pool and out to the ocean was lovely, the staff were very attentive with drinks whilst not intruding on your meal time.
The bar area was nice, with a pool table and table tennis available to play. Again the staff (Patrick, Richard, Grace and Lynn) were outstanding giving out bar snacks and topping up your drinks without even needing to get off the comfortable sofas to go to the bar, they took away your empty and came back with a fresh drink without even asking. The bar area is set above the pool and provides views out to the ocean.
Sunbathing area was clean. The staff provide cushions and towels for your lounger, you just need to walk up to the loungers you want and they come over to attend to you.
This hotel allowed its guests to use the facilities at the neighbouring Sentido hotels, but their guests could not use our facilities. This was great as the other hotel was louder and busier than ours and it was where the entertainment was happening during the day. Our hotel was quiet all day long and was very very peaceful. However the entertainment team at the neighbouring hotel were excellent on the nights that we did venture over there.
The location of the hotel was great, and although the beach boys did approach you as soon as you walked down on to the beach, generally if you said NO THANK YOU they left you alone. I would recommend taking a trip out to the coral reef at low tide to snorkel at the edge of the ocean, one of the beach boys 'Captain Alex' took us both out there for 1000KSH each in his boat made out of a mango tree, which was lovely.
The shop on the right of the sun lounger area does look a bit daunting to start with, but again if you tell them you just want to look then they'll leave you alone to browse. We bought a couple of items from them and make sure you haggle well - we went from 18500KSH to 5000KSH, have an amount that you want to spend before you got to the shop and then don't move from it.
There were a lot of Germans at the hotel, but I get the impressions that there are a lot at all of the resorts because it's cheaper to get to Kenya than for us Brits. However there wasn't too much of the typical 'towels down by 5am' so there's no loungers left, we never had a problem getting a lounger and towards the end of our holiday the pool attendant was sorting our loungers out for us before we were even up!
There were monkeys on the grounds, however they never caused us any grief and it seemed they spent most of their time at the busier hotel next door.
There were no children at the hotel until our last week when we presume it was a French half term, as a couple of French families arrived.
This holiday was extra special as we went out as a normal couple and came back engaged!
We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to any couple looking for a quiet hotel that gives you an exclusive feel without being excessively expensive.
