I'm currently staying at this hotel and this is one of many trips I've made here since it opened. Consistently, with each visit the hotel has improved which is good, because when it first opened, it did suffer from the usual opening pains and poor service. I'm delighted to say that this hotel has come along way and ranks among my favourite worldwide. Every time I come back, the staff recognise me and welcome me back by name, even if I haven't been back for 6 months or more (the only other hotel I've had this is the Mandarin Oriental in Indonesia). I stay in a lot of hotels all over the world and this is one of the only ones where I feel a personal connection with the hotel and staff.
Evans, the doorman (who I see has already been mentioned a number of times in other reviews), is fantastic - a real credit to IHG. He greets new guests like they were long lost friends, making you genuinely feel very welcome. While waiting for my transport in the morning, I will often have little chats, a laugh or a joke with Evans, putting me in a good mood for the working day. This is what good hotels are about. I really hope he stays with the hotel.
All the staff are charming. You can walk around the hotel and the housekeepers, workmen, security guards will all say hello. Another special mention goes to Jacinta in the Club Lounge. What attentive and friendly service. Nothing is too much trouble. I made a comment, in jest, about how far my room was for the club lounge- by coincidence, I've always been pretty much right next to the hotel lounge. As soon as I said that, Jacinta apologised and said the hotel was at quite high occupancy but would check if another room was available, closer to lounge and have my luggage moved! You really couldn't ask for more. There was another excellent member of staff in the Club Lounge, Adam, who I'm sorry to say has now left the hotel.
Crowne Plaza Nairobi put a lot of effort in to making sure you get a good night sleep. From a pillow menu, featuring 6 or 7 different types of pillows, to a complimentary aromatherapy kit to help you fall asleep to a guaranteed wakeup call (or your night is free).
I'm also pleased to note that CP Nairobi, unlike some other IHG properties, consistently recognises loyalty and they go out of their way to make sure Priority Club Platinum members are treated well. So if you're an Priority Club member, I would recommend staying here over the main InterContinental in the centre of Nairobi. On my stay before this one, I was welcomed back to the hotel with a personal letter in my room, along with a bottle of wine and a fruit platter, not to mention a complimentary room upgrade (to a full suite, having only booked a standard room). So to PC Platinum members out there, stay here rather than the main InterContinental in town - you won't regret it.
I would make three suggestions to the Hotel Manager:
1) Please look to improve the service in the main Baraza restaurant. It is already much improved from when the hotel first opened, but it can still be chronically slow at times, even when there are only 3 other tables.
2)) I've stayed here a lot and it's only recently I became aware that on a Sunday afternoon, there is live music / a singer and a BBQ by the pool. It doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere, so I've always left the hotel on a Sunday afternoon in search of other activities. Having become aware of it on my last stay, I'm currently writing this review by the pool, listening to the live music and drinking a few Tuskers (the local beer). Perhaps maybe put a letter in the rooms of guests staying on a Sunday to invite them to the restaurant for live music and a BBQ? I guarantee more people will take advantage of it.
3) Please make sure Jacinta and Evans never leave - they are a credit to your hotel and IHG as a whole.
