This is an excellent hotel set on a large island in the Nile, only 30 mins from the fine new airport. Excellent food, helpful staff, extremely clean (everywhere), 3 pools. Rooms well air-conditioned and including fridge. Weather was excellent and so were all the sites, esp. the day trip to the West Bank and the balloon ride - but they are all MUCH cheaper booked locally than with your tour operator. (Try Jolleys, a couple of doors down from the Old Winter Palace Hotel AND, for a more personalised service/experience, the other Travel Agents in that same block). Small zoo on hotel site - but cover-up or risk being bitten there, by bugs, not by Cleo the (adorable) camel! We would HIGHLY recommend this hotel, esp as it is 15 mins away from the hustle/HASSLE of Luxor itself.... The hotel provides regular shuttle buses/motor launch to Luxor - these are free, and the driver does not beg for tips (and nor do the rest of the hotel staff), unlike everyone else in Luxor... Couple of tips - change your sterling when you get there - much better exchange rate than at home - even from the ATM machine in the lobby, even allowing for a £2 transaction charge. Don't book dinners with your holiday - you can have an excellent (different) buffet each night for about £14; better still, keep-down the cost - and your weight - by having just the main course from the "Terrace Menu". This is very good and will only cost £10-£15 sterling ($18 - $27) for TWO people, including a couple of drinks - and you can watch the sun go down over the Nile! Make a trip to the Sunshine Orphanage (on Television St - directly opposite the main entrance to Luxor Hospital - not the local hosp. shown on the hotel map - only a shortish walk from the Isis Hotel - the hotel bus's first stop). This was started by an English lady and does wonderful work - it will humble you and uplift you at the same time. If you can, take along some clean old clothes (0 -13 yrs), even if it means buying some from a charity shop, some Biros, coloured pens, reading and colouring books, etc. You wil be very warmly received and the gifts will be very much appreciated - esp as there are 70 kids living on just ONE floor of a small (fairly rough) apartment block. To summarise: Go to the Movenpick, go to the Orphange, go the W Bank and to Karnak Temple (esp at night) - I promise you will not regret any of it! PS If you go with Thomson - do not place much faith in the map they give you, it is very misleading, esp. in that it faces South instead of North, so it shows a railway line where the Nile should be... (Ask Renske - resident Thomson rep at the Movenpick - and she will draw you a simple map of how to get to the orphanage, or anywhere else.) Enjoy!!
