“Don't bother”

We took a felucca to a Nubian village and entered one of the private homes there for some tea with our guide. Other tourists were an Egyptian family. The "village" is a series of small tourist shops with owners desperately trying to get the attention of the few visitors there are. It is very, very sad to see. These people were displaced by the Nasser Lake project and are now trying to eke out a living with the few tourists who visit. BYW, Egypt is perfectly safe for tourists now, in spite of the demonstrations.

“Quiet Peaceful Time Spent New Friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

I found the visit to the Nubian Village to be one of the highlights of my trip to Egypt. During my visit I was invited to sit and have a conversation with a Nubian family. over a cup of tea and a Coca-Cola we laughed and exchanged stories of our very different lives. I can a way with a sense of what really is important in life. These are beautiful people without many material possessions but a peace I envy.

“If yo'd like to visit a Nubian village, visit the real one on your own on the Elephantine island”

Our guide recommended a tour to a Nubian village in Aswan, we tried it and were very disappointed. They bring you in a nubian house where they have three crocodiles of different sizes, hundred tourists holding them while they take picture of them. This was probably the worst experience we had in Egypt. It was really depressing and humiliating for the crocodiles. They were treated in a bad way like stupid toys.
To make things worst, there was nothing else to see except a couple of rooms and the market outside which was nice but not worth it.
If you'd like to visit a real Nubian village, go on your own on the Elephantine Island, you can recognize it easily, there's an hotel with a big tower, the Movenpick resort. There's a boat that brings you there every day 24 hour. You can walk in the Nubian village, no one is going to bother you, they live their lifes and you should respect them and possible not take any picture. I have seen one crocodile house only and one man only tried to get us to visit his house, he said he was the chief of the village but we did not go in.
If you respect the animals, do not go to the Nubian village that the guides or tour operators recommend, but choose the one on the Elephantine Island and visit it respecting their habits and life style.

“Tourist trap”

The boat trip was nice. The village is one big shopping area with tours all around. We had lunch in à Nubian house, paid to much for not so good food. The people who lived in the house kept asking money, although everything was in luxes in the tour.

Definitely visit the nubian village, you really get a sense of how people live in a culture that is very different than Egypt's.
