We had already been to another hotel in the Dreamland area and because we liked it a lot, we decided to sample others, too (there are about 4-5 in total in that area). We are a half-Egyptian family and mainly go to hotels for some break from local ways of life – to swim and sunbathe that would be pretty impossible in the small town outside of Cairo where we live. But when I compare, I compare not only to what is available in Egypt, but also with my previous travels to various hotels in Europes/Asia that I am glad to say were mostly worth their price. I was a bit apprehensive due to previous reviewers not being so happy with food or service, but because we mainly go for the pool, then it seemed to have one of the best designed pools in the area and being immediately next to Dream Park did not hurt either, because our kids 3 and 5yrs adore all those parks.
The general impression is that of a very business-perfect place. It is a long time since I was to a real business class hotel last time, because most hotels here in Egypt where we go are resort type of relaxed hotels. In Sheraton you feel you should have brought your laptop with you and... when was the next report due? In a good sense: the level of consideration given to comfort details throughout the property is such that you feel you are back in the competitive business environment where every detail counts!
Check-in
Service in reception was kind of matter-of-fact but friendly and very smooth from the start. Husband rated it as a bit on the cool side, but was perhaps simply more reserved than in beach hotels. Certainly not to complain, if you love your business of check-in done smoothly and without too much chit-chat. We arrived much ahead of check-in time anyway, and without reservations – this being low time now and as there are other hotels around, we felt bold to do so. Quite a number of people seemed to check out on that day and for some reason the concierge wished to give us a room with a good view, so we were asked to wait, perhaps an hour all in all. We thanked no to a club level room that would have cost slightly more, as we intended to spend most time out in sun anyway, and you do not sit and sip free drinks in Club Lounge with kids hanging to you, either. I had my eye on those Club rooms originally - they look nice and roomy but seemingly without balcony. Finally then we were approached and when we reached the room we had been upgraded to SPG or Starwood Prefered Guest floor, with not other obvious reason that either it is a low period and they try be nice, or that we were simply lucky. My observations are thus all about a room on that floor.
Room
To start with, decoration was very nice – dark wood with glass and aluminium – kind of sleek and contemporary without being totally boring. A few paintings on walls, quite nice to the eye, usual, non-disturbing abstracts. Full carpet floors – the room smelled slightly stale when opened first, but it disappeared in a minute when ventilation switched on. Nothing unpleasant after that. Very sound-proof windows with anti-sun coating – the noise at the fun park just 100 m away was considerable the Egyptian way (loud pop music etc) but it was totally quiet in the room. I had indeed to open the window to understand if the park was still working at night (it operates 16.00-23.00 in hot summer time). Pleasant bathroom, economic size but half of it large closed walk-in shower the way they do them now, strong nice water stream from the shower head. Everything was built into wall and raised over floor so easy to clean and was clean to the eye, too, with exception of otherwise very elegant vase for toothbrushes – no one had looked into it to remove cultural layers of toothpaste left by former guests.
Nice smelling SPG own brand toiletries – hair conditioner with mandarin and mint, for example – delicious! I usually bring and use my own brands but here I have to admit I "stole" all 4 bottles – gel, cream, shampoo and conditioner – and continued to use at home for the sheer pleasure of the fragrance.
Nice roomy closets incl. a sizable safe roomy enough for a big laptop even, and iron and ironing board in the closet, too. 4 deep and large drawers under TV commode – plenty of room to put everything away neatly.
Fridge did not work well but we did not bother to ask help for one night only. May have been the electronic controls simply.
Kettle with several tea and coffee bags, sugar, cream, nice couple of mugs, "whiskey" and water glasses by the mirror. Complimentary small water bottle.
The installed hair dryer by mirror in the room, instead of bathroom - much more comfy.
New LCD TV, and TV menu – all channels neatly organised by themes like news, movies, business, sports, kids etc. Very thoughtful.
Sweet Sleeper bed – there must be a reason for a hotel to name its beds – there was! We slept like on clouds. Good quality high thread count cotton bed clothes, plain white but pillow cases adorned with earth-coloured velvet ribbons – simple yet a bit luxurious. Six different size pillows – all nice soft and not too high but you could then pile as high as wished. Free kids bed was offered, these in Egypt are usually big enough so two of our age can share.
There should be free wi-fi available on that floor which we did not check as indeed did not have any need for Internet for those days.
It seemed that anything supplied or dictated by the Sheraton chain - the total infrastructure - was well-considered and very comfy. For someone tired from the day's hustle and bustle it should make a very nice point where to sleep out and regain powers for the following day.
Conferences
It felt perfect as a conference destination, I immediately remembered when moving around in the hotel, that someone at TA had mentioned it and I felt exactly the same way! It is exactly the right size, so it feels like it is all dedicated to one event, while a bit secluded so no one escapes easily and all stay together. Fun park in the evening should offer distraction for those who wish or a chance to rub shoulders with modern locals who love to go there. Slightly camp-ish or one house-one family feel I would say. All facilities very easy to reach from rooms or from the conference hall across a small courtyard - the pools, the nice and airy gym/spa, the restaurant.
Food
Only one restaurant operated, and it seems to be the only catering point, too, serving food 24 hours even outside buffet times, and also servicing the sheesha bar outside by the main pool and there is room service, of course. We used room service for the evening because after lots of sun did not feel hungry enough for buffet dinner. Portions were huge and meat tasted slightly out of freezer but both kids ate from one meal of french fries and chicken nuggets and they did not even quite finish it. I enjoyed an American style baked cheese cake – 2 generous slices with strawberry sauce and fruit salad in separate tiny bowls. Two meals and cappuccino cost around 100le, not cheap in Egypt for essentially fast-food quality, but fair for the quantity of food and very elegant presentation on a huge silvery tray. Main courses including meat seemed to be mostly around 100 le while pizzas pastas and other lesser snacks were around 50. I'd say 70/30le would have felt more appropriate. Cappuccino and other hot beverages – 20 le. Room service menu also contained a kids menu which we did not find in the main restaurant - one more point for us to enjoy the meal in the room. Their meal came with their own tiny fresh round breads, very cute, and the main draw - a kid-size miniature catchup bottle for their fries! :-)
Breakfast was OK for the 8-10 of guests I spotted in the restaurant in the morning – not too lavish but what do you do if levels are in general low. Nothing important was missing, though. I did not inquire about pancakes or waffles and did not see a station, as there normally is, but plenty of other cakes and coffee breads available, nice tiny size allowed sampling, too, and sausages, hams and omelet were all there and nice and generous. Juice was local favorites guava and mango instead of the standard orange - a nice idea, I think. Not fresh but not also from concentrate - tasted like normal purepak supermarket brands you normally drink at home. Karkade (Hibiscus) drink, of course, well mixed and sweetened to a nice point, I am not such fan after all these years but here ended up finishing both kids glasses, it was so nice. Coffee and tea arrived in generous thermos jugs, now coffee was absolutely watery, but the Egyptian's own coffee is like Turkish – very strong, so they rarely get it totally right for the "American" taste. Good stuff otherwise and I guess you could ask them to prepare a more strong version – I ran after kids and simply forgot. :-)
Service was swift and friendly everywhere except by pools – even when we were the only people out by the dark pool in the evening trying to decide if and what we want to eat, we were approached with menus quite soon.
The outdoors
The pool and poolside were indeed very nice, even elegant. There is a baby pool but half of the main pool is also under 90 cm - great for "cruising" around the swim-up bar (closed as we were there) as also for kids above that height :-). Jacuzzi alcove - nice. Waterfall provided nice splashing sound.
Main pool looked clean OK, but a smaller pool other side of building had enormous quantities of sand in it and a few loose tiles outside – a bit careless perhaps to leave it like that, and for everyone to see it too? There is of course lots of sand in sea, but anyway my kids refused to get in saying it was "dirty".
No one appeared in the first day to offer any towels. I finally "stole" two when we needed to leave already and were totally wet so I walked past the station to see if there was a phone and saw and helped myself to a couple.
Next morning at 10 o'clock the pool was not cleaned yet. The team just arrived then and asked us to go to other pool and began cleaning... That seemed a bit lazy, to be honest, even we were the only ones at that time and it seemed to be a low occupancy day otherwise, too. Luckily, they were quite fast and we enjoyed some sun and then splashed some more before check-out.
Kids swim ducks disappeared from the pool side the first afternoon, I carelessly left them around as we do nearly everywhere when go inside for a short siesta in afternoon, but here we returned to find them no more. Not much value those plastic things but just to note. While my photo camera was on the table in our room at all times and nothing happened to it nor to our wallets or handbags that were also lying around, as we kind of totally forgot we are in a hotel :-).
Dream Park tickets are available from the hotel at a discount, 50 le per pers instead of 60 le, applying from 3 yrs but inside then all attractions are free, just queue and ride! Unfortunately the gate leading directly from hotel to the park, but also all gates from hotel leading to the main entrances outside the park, were closed, and no way could you pass even they were manned and I asked. That is a bit inconsiderate, because nearly half the Cairo must be passing those gates on better days, and they do not even probably guess what is that yellow building over there. Open the gates, put up some placards with your day use offers and take them in before they go and spend all that money in the park only (I would think)! And let your guests get out more easily, too. Goes to combine very nicely to spend morning by the pool, then continue to the park around sunset. As it was, we were too lazy (and a bit afraid of solitary dark alleys) to walk the 200 m or so via main driveway. There was a small play ground on lawn at the back of hotel, for our 3 and 5yrs that was perfectly satisfying and after long day in pool we did not continue to the park. But we will return yet.
All-in-all
From 2 hotels in the immediate area that we have sampled now, Swiss Inn has better while slightly cheaper food (really delicious fresh food from room service and buffet, and perfect morning coffee) and a nice garden, but we did love the pool at Sheraton better, and we loved the kids play ground as there is nothing at the Swiss Inn. We loved those sweet sleeper beds! We will now also want to sample Hilton, also with a nice pool and an even better play ground than others, but we were perfectly satisfied with our experience at Sheraton, even considering the slight comments here and there, while of course also considering the promotional prices this year, and will surely return, and recommend it for day or overnight uses, for all above points, and to use it as base for visiting the Dream Park.
Room Tip: Rooms with even numbers face the Dream Park while uneven numbers seem to have a better view towards...
