Where do I even begin with this review? I flew into Cairo at the beginning of November to experience the historical wonders of this great land, against the backdrop of history that is occurring right now. And it was the best decision that I've made in a while. Staying at the Windsor was the best part of that decision. From the moment that I booked my room, I was in contact with their staff and they arranged just about everything. I live in Washington State and it's a long, long flight so having a driver pick me up was absolutely clutch. The driver was waiting there with a big smile on his face and my introduction to Egypt had begun.
I met Samir when I checked in, and he upgraded my room with no hesitation, since I made a mistake when I booked. The concierge showed me to my room and made sure that I had the right plug in for my electronics. The food is great and the Egyptian Stella is cheap at the awesome bar on the second floor. This hotel is steeped in history and charm, and its easy to get lost wondering what great archaeologists and explorers have stayed here.
I had a loose itinerary for my three week trip and had debated on organizing with a travel company before I left. I opted not to and decided to simply check with Samir when I got there. Within minutes, he had set me up with an itinerary that included a private tour of Zoser's Pyramid, the Red Pyramid, and the Great Pyramids, an overnight train to Luxor, transportation in Luxor complete with 2 days of site seeing, a 3 night, 5 star cruise on the Nile, transportation, room, felucca ride and siteseeing in Aswan, arranged transportation to Abu Simbel and back to Aswan. This all for a fraction of the cost of what I would have paid had I booked before I left. Those eight days cost me $430 minus entrance fees. Not bad at all! I continued onto Hurghada and ultimately Dahab from there. Dahab is an absolute must if you decide to travel to Egypt.
All of the guides that Samir arranged were very knowledgeable and friendly, but one person in particular stands out more than anyone else. If you decide to arrange site seeing in Cairo, be sure to ask for Mina Samir Mlinza. Mina has a great sense of humor, is very charismatic, and knowledgeable. He was so much fun that we immediately became friends on Facebook. He even taught me the best way to avoid hassle at the sites and Samir taught me what scams to watch for in the city. His whole staff is the antithesis of hassle which is a welcome relief in Egypt.
Despite the political climate over there now, I wouldn't hesitate to go again right now if given the opportunity. You're more likely to get in a car accident at home then you are to get yourself in trouble in Egypt. That's not to say that there aren't inherent risks, but a little common sense and research go a long way. The best part about going now is that there aren't that many tourists there. I never waited in line once and was greeted with open arms by just about everyone I met. Don't be scared by the media hype. Do yourself a favor and just go! Let the folks at the Windsor Hotel take care of you. I went all by lonesome and it was truly the most memorable experience I've had in a long time.
