“Friendliest and Cheapest Medina Accommodation in Tangier”

We stayed at the Pension Amar in September 2009, coming from England. This is a basic Pension in the very centre of the medina, right next to the Petit Socco. We paid 100 dirhams (about £8) for a triple room, which we thought was great value.

We found our room to very clean and had a look around at the other rooms while we were there. There are 8 rooms of different sizes, catering from two to five people per room. There are no dorm rooms here, so there is not a large student presence in the hotel. Overall the place was very quiet, even though it was Ramadan.

Yusef, the owner, along with his Night Manager, Ali were incredibly friendly to us and were always offering us tea and coffee which they ordered in for us from a local café. Yusef kindly waived the shower room charge for us, even though we had not booked by phone beforehand.

On the down side, there was no power point in our room so I was unable to charge my laptop, but they offered to charge my phone at the reception and I saw a 4 gang power block which they used for this purpose. They have TV in the lounge in the evenings, and thankfully the volume was kept at a decent level - some of the cheaper places I have stayed in Morocco have the TV blaring loud at all hours - but it was okay here.

Another minus is that they need to get a new water heater for the shower and I mentioned this to Yusef who said that they were going to get one very soon.

We stayed for one week here. It really is affordable, especially since prices in Tangier have gone through the roof in recent years.

Over the years, I have stayed at several cheap medina hotels in Tangier, but I found this one to be the best. The decor is lovely and the whole place looks like a Riad house from Marrakesh. We will definitely stay there again next time we visit Tangier.
