Well, good things first. It is a very beautiful Riad, our room was great, and the food is outstanding; by far the best I had in Morocco. Staff seemingly nice for the most part (see exception below). Also, good location, close walk to the Medina and only 20 Dh cab (Fes cabs are metered, unlike most of the rest of Morocco) ride to center of new part of town. Everything was going well until…
Bad (very). So, after the third night I wake up for breakfast and go out in the courtyard, and am sitting there waiting, and begin to hear a familiar voice of a staff person (in English) screaming from the kitchen area about America and Iraq ,over and over again, and hating America and how America is a terrible and uncivil society, blah, blah… So I sit there not wanting to believe what I am hearing but it keeps going on and on... I did not misunderstand one comment, it keeps repeating. It eventually stops. I sit there. Ten minutes has past; I am checking my watch… No one comes out. Do they think I did not hear any of that! It is like being hit in the head with a baseball bat. This actually happened! I go back to the room and tell my wife to get up and pack, immediately, we must leave, now! Once you realize you are being held in contempt simply for where you are from how can you stay? I mean this is a riad, not a huge 200 or 300 room hotel, you can’t really just ignore it and go on with your day. We were to stay two more nights and when we suddenly said we were leaving they did not ask why or really did not seem to care which just reinforced the above.
We are and have always been very quiet, modest, easy-going and respectful travelers. (Really, a drunk Brit accidentally walked into our room one night here which we laughed off). We have travelled the world for 20+ years and nothing like this has ever happened before.
No matter how respectful you are you will be held in held in contempt simply for being an American here (don’t fool yourself you are no different).
We went directly to the station and took the next train to Casablanca and ended up leaving Morocco five days earlier than planned.
I am giving two stars but should give zero stars. However it is beautiful and great food and if you can put up with being held quietly (or not) in contempt it is four or five star.
