“Organised an excellent tour guide for the medina”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Riad Ghita is easy to find from Bab RCIF. I was a walk-in customer... i had arrived after a long haul flight from SA in Casablanca and taken the train immediately to Fes. I was exhausted when I arrived so was happy to find this Riad. It is beautifully furnished in traditional Moroccan style. I stayed here twice, with a trip to Chefchaouen in between. The first room was OK, but the second room (lalla Zineb) was amazing. I have never stayed in such a vast and beautiful room! The staff were very friendly and welcoming, it felt like coming home when I arrived for the second part of my stay. The hotel organised a guided tour of the Fes medina with Raashid which I enjoyed very much. I would highly recommend getting a guide from the hotel (especially Raashid) to see the medina. Raashid was kind, very informative and helpful and spoke excellent English. He made this day in Fes one of the highlights of my two week trip to Morocco.

We arrived around midnight and were greeted warmly by a staff member who had stayed there to meet us. It was the beginning of our two night stay in the heart of Fez.The staff went out of there way to look after us .We had a beautiful homecooked evening meal on the terrace overlooking Fez.Location is excellent and it gives you a great Moraccan experience staying in a restored Riad.Certainly beats staying in a tourist hotel.

“Great stay - staff so friendly and welcoming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

This was our first riad experience in Morocco and we certainly struck gold! The staff were just fab - nothing too much trouble and we felt very welcome as soon as we walked through the door. The riad is on the edge of the medina - a couple of mins walk to jump into a taxi to get to the main sights. As we were on a tight schedule, we booked a tour around Fez with a guide recommended by Samari (fantastic member of staff). Mohammed was great, very knowledgeable and easy going. Was certainly worth it as spent the day having a tour around the medina and if we would have done it ourselves we would have got lost and would have been hassled by unofficial guides. Also went to a pottery place just on the outskirts of the city (pretty pricey) and some good view points.

Our rooms were really nice (had the two right at the top of the raid) and really enjoyed the selection of Moroccon hot salads we had on the first evening. Breakfast was good but no homemade yoghurt!

“Americans Stay Away”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

Well, good things first. It is a very beautiful Riad, our room was great, and the food is outstanding; by far the best I had in Morocco. Staff seemingly nice for the most part (see exception below). Also, good location, close walk to the Medina and only 20 Dh cab (Fes cabs are metered, unlike most of the rest of Morocco) ride to center of new part of town. Everything was going well until…

Bad (very). So, after the third night I wake up for breakfast and go out in the courtyard, and am sitting there waiting, and begin to hear a familiar voice of a staff person (in English) screaming from the kitchen area about America and Iraq ,over and over again, and hating America and how America is a terrible and uncivil society, blah, blah… So I sit there not wanting to believe what I am hearing but it keeps going on and on... I did not misunderstand one comment, it keeps repeating. It eventually stops. I sit there. Ten minutes has past; I am checking my watch… No one comes out. Do they think I did not hear any of that! It is like being hit in the head with a baseball bat. This actually happened! I go back to the room and tell my wife to get up and pack, immediately, we must leave, now! Once you realize you are being held in contempt simply for where you are from how can you stay? I mean this is a riad, not a huge 200 or 300 room hotel, you can’t really just ignore it and go on with your day. We were to stay two more nights and when we suddenly said we were leaving they did not ask why or really did not seem to care which just reinforced the above.

We are and have always been very quiet, modest, easy-going and respectful travelers. (Really, a drunk Brit accidentally walked into our room one night here which we laughed off). We have travelled the world for 20+ years and nothing like this has ever happened before.

No matter how respectful you are you will be held in held in contempt simply for being an American here (don’t fool yourself you are no different).

We went directly to the station and took the next train to Casablanca and ended up leaving Morocco five days earlier than planned.

I am giving two stars but should give zero stars. However it is beautiful and great food and if you can put up with being held quietly (or not) in contempt it is four or five star.
