“Iberostar Founty Beach Hotel Agadir, February 2012”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed in a junior suite at this hotel on a half-board basis between 31 January and 7 February 2012.

The location of the hotel is excellent, about a kilometre south of the main town and towards the end of the strip of hotels fronting the ocean. A 20 minute stroll along the promenade or the excellent beach will take you to the main area of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. If you wish to visit the main souk, El Had, the price is only 20 dirhams by taxi.

Our room (2125) was large, airy, clean and in good condition and everything including the air con/heating and the fridge worked very well. Similarly the hotel throughout was well looked after and clean.

We were given exactly what we booked, with a good view of the pool area, gardens and the ocean from our balcony. All public areas, including toilets, reception, terrace and restaurant were always clean and tidy and the grounds were very well tended.

The food was very good for mass buffet style, with lots of variety and choice, with some dishes cooked on the spot – check out the breakfast beignets (doughnuts) with cinnamon and vanilla sugar! The staff were generally helpful, efficient and pleasant though it could take a bit of time to get a drink on the terrace during the evenings.

Good basic French would go a long way – like much of the area, the hotel caters mostly for French and German speaking guests. Having said this, the reception staff spoke English well enough and most other staff had some basic English, so we were able to get by.

Overall, we were very pleasantly surprised at the standards on offer and felt very safe and comfortable during our stay, both in the hotel and outside. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel based on our (out of season) visit. The hotel caters well for families with young children, the elderly and disabled, and couples like us, neither young nor yet so old.

A few niggles:
We arrived around 3:00pm after lunch was finished and well before dinner at 6:30, and no refreshments were offered on our arrival. We found that light snacks and drinks were available from the pool bar, but as we were half board, these were chargeable. It took a while to work out what was not available to half board guests, particularly in relation to drinks, and most of the staff appeared not to know either (they tended to assume we were on all inclusive rates). We could have upgraded to all inclusive at the hotel for 150 dirhams per person per day, if we wished – had we booked all inclusive with the travel agent it would have been a lot cheaper. Worth bearing in mind if you intend staying in the hotel for all meals and especially refreshments.

TV reception was very poor, and we found only 1 English speaking channel (movies subtitled in Arabic). However, there is excellent 24 hour wifi reception in the lobby and terrace area.

There were no facilities in the room to make a hot drink – so if this is important to you take a travel kettle.

There is no ATM in the hotel, but there is one in the next hotel, Palais du Rose, a very short walk away. However, foreign exchange is available.

Finally, we noticed that our favourite tipple was not the genuine article, bit of a cheek for 70 dirhams!

Room Tip: Ask for pool/ocean view rooms. Junior suite is worth the extra cost

“Generally very good”

This is a good, cheap hotel. The food was freshly cooked too. The pool was clean and the staff did a good job of keeping the rooms clean too. Our key card became a constant problem however - it randomly would not work at least 3 times most days which meant constantly having to go back to reception for them to reset - only for it not to work again. They were apologetic but only after I made a fuss.

The location is not great unless you do not plan to leave the hotel. The main shops, bars and restaurants are at least 1/2 hour walk away which is fine if you like walking (like we do) or plan to take taxis (which are pretty cheap). But if you just want to pop out, then it's not handy. The beach is right on the doorstep though which is great for watching the sunset and paddling in the surf.

Agadir is a great destination for those looking for a cheap sunny holiday. It is not typically Morrocan though - finding anything authentic was difficult. The people are very friendly although you are constantly hassled by people trying to sell you things. It can get very tiring.
If you want a holiday by the pool, then this is the place for you. But if you want a Morrocan adventure or a hassle free holiday then go somewhere else!

“We loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Hotel
The building is beautiful, huge entrance area and the room was very spacious, very clean and the bathroom was enormous. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. Our stay was out of season in January and the hotel appeared to be less than half full. I have no idea how it might cope in the middle of summer but for us there was plenty of room and it was relaxing and enjoyable.
The brochure said there was an indoor pool, however this is part of the spa and is only available free between 12 noon and 2 pm. I was pleased to discover that one of the outdoor pools is heated in winter. I loved it but since it is deep all over with straight sides it is not suitable for non-swimmers. This also meant that there were no aquarobics in winter.
Food
Anyone who has read me before will remember that I am a human dustbin and therefore do not consider myself to be qualified as a food critic. However, the choice was such that I cannot imagine anyone, however fussy, not being able to enjoy something. Breakfast offered the usual cereals, cold meats and cheeses, yogurt as well as the hot counter. In addition there was omlette making on demand and also fresh pancake and doughnut making with syrup and other things to put on them. Pancakes are a feature of Morocco and were also available during the afternoon at the pool bar. We took lunch at the pool bar as it meant we didn't need to change from our swimwear and could sit at the outdoor tables. There was less choice than in the main dining room but there was still salad, a hot meat choice as well as french fries and pizza. The pizza chef was cooking them fresh and had difficultly keeping up with demand as they were so good. At dinner the choice was huge again, salads, cold and hot meat dishes, pasta, fresh pizza and french fries etc. On one side there were traditional tagines containing Moroccan cooking with cous-cous. I was impressed that the food was mostly kept hot. Once or twice the last bits of a dish were a bit on the cool side but generally I was happy with the temperature.
There is also a Moroccan restaurant that guests can book for one evening during a weeks stay. The menu is fixed so if you don't feel adventurous give it a miss. I thought it was overrated and why they ration visits is a mystery as there was virtually no-one in it, this of course might be different in summer. The food wasn't far different from the Moroccan food served in the main restaurant, except for a pigeon pie which was very sweet and unusually I wasn't keen.
All-inclusive
Drinks in the dining room were waiter served which did sometimes lead to a delay while catching the waiters eye but it wasn't much of a problem. Drinks at the bar were quite strong, the rum and coke I had felled me - but then I am a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.
Other
Pool towels are available on a deposit and can be changed daily at set times. The safe in the room works on a key, I prefer a combination lock personally but then I did lose my key on the first day and felt a bit silly but the staff on reception were very laid back and just replaced it for me with no recriminations. The safe charge is fairly steep but I suppose it's better than losing your valuables.
Entertainment
Frankly I thought it was naff. However since the animation team have to cater for all ages and many nationalities, giving announcements in 3 languages I suppose they are up against it. We suffered the bad dancing and the miming to records but skipped the bingo.
Out and About
The back of the hotel opens onto a new promenade which runs alongside Agadir beach. I imagine if you walked steadily you could reach the Marina in about an hour. If you don't walk then there is a little road train which does a scenic circular tour for 18dhms per person (return) passing the bird garden (free admission) and the Marina. At both stops you can get off the train and back on again using the same ticket. The battered little orange coloured taxis at the front of the hotel will take you just about anywhere in the town very cheaply. The bird garden is well worth a visit and after you walk through it you come to the fixed price shop. This is a huge place selling all the stuff you see in the souks, but with a price attached and no hassle. There is a fish market at the Marina end but be aware that the locals will insist on taking you round it and then expect to be paid. Our guide just happened to have a sister who ran one of the fish cafes there and we were sold undrinkable pink sweet "coffee" and urged to pay for his mint tea. It cost me about £6, which is not much in the grand scheme of things but it is something to be aware of. Agadir is a modern resort, the earthquake of 1960 demolished everything. All that is left are the walls of the old Kasbah up on the hill. It is clean and quite attractive but not historic.
Weather
January was similar to a good summers day in England. The nights are cool so if you don't like being overheated January is a good time to go.

Room Tip: Our room was on the front and didn't have pool/sea views but I think it might have been quieter...

As this was our first time in Morocco we were slightly unsure as we got a very good deal and wonderered what to expect. On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and when the porter took our luggage up to the room we were pleasantly surprised, spacious room and spotlessly clean. We went to explore and met Nourdine at the bar who mixed up one of his special 'welcome cocktails' The pool area is fabulous with lots of comfy sun-loungers (we did go January) and pool side bar and restaurant. The buffet restaurant catered for every taste and more, with great carvery and tagines. Our head waiter Omar ensured that we were well cared for, and always kept our glasses full. The Animation team worked very hard and always mixed with all the guests. The evening entertainment was sometimes a bit a bit amateurish but was done with great energy and fun. All in all we had a great time because the staff worked so hard to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. The Manager Alejandro Barrios and his depute Illan Elorduy-7 were very visible everywhere ensuring guests were happy.
