“Good hotel in a depressing city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

I was a couple of days for business in Algiers. While the city is really boring and for my understanding too much police running around...the Sofitel pleasantly surprises. It is a hotel which is already 20 years old but is very well maintained. The rooms are of a good size same as the bathrooms, although there is a separate shower stall missing. Everything functions in the room and wifi is included in the room price and the speedis decent and reliable except for one morning where it was extremely slow.

Positive are also the dining outlets. The Algerian ding outlet is excellent same way the French Restaurant. The breakfast is extremely good and varied as well.

As many people have said - everything is very pricey in the hotel - we paid 270 EUR for the hotel which is too expensive, but it has to do with the fact that there only 4 decent hotels in algiers... of reputation i mean.

For the positive end : A nice touch is the free minibar (softdrinks) this is really much appreciated...

Room Tip: See that you get a room with view on Hammam garden it is quieter.

“Pricey but good quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

The hotel main areas are very well looked after - the attention to detail is great. The staff are very warm and welcoming and the rooms are spacious.
The pool is well looked after and is great to sit and relax at.
The price is quite high given the relative price of things in Algiers but if you're prepared to spend that little extra it's worth it.

“Very good hotel, but overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2011

It is a very nice, modern hotel with great staff, but it is way overpriced. Apparently, there is almost no competition among hotels in Algiers, so they can charge what they like. They actually charged me less when I paid the bill than the price I was quoted when I registered. It only has two lifts, which is not adequate for a hotel of this size. I think there is another one, which is being repaired.

Algiers is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to with some of the nicest people who love to find out where you come from and what you think of their city.

“Expensive, but nearly perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2011

I stayed 3 nigths at this hotel in March '11. I had a room on the executive level, as I reserved quite late and no more standard rooms were available. As I already mentioned in earlier reviews, 5*-hotels in Algiers are very expensive. I paid 292 € per night, excluding breakfast, which is comparable to the other hotels in Algiers (Sheraton, Hilton).
My room was on the executive level, which had a separate check-in counter. Of course the guy was extremely friendly, a fresh juice was offered to me. Overall, the staff at this hotel is very helpful and friendly, as there were a couple of things they organized for me.
My room was on the 4th floor, heading to the backside of the hotel. It was not that big, which I expected for a room on the executive level, but it was very stylish and furnished with high quality materials. The bed was huge and it was super comfortable. There was a big flatscreen TV, a water boiler, coffee and tea for free, as well as 2 bottles of mineral water, that were refilled every day. The wireless internet connection was included in my rate. During peak times, it was not working very well, and they organized a cable for me, which was working better. The air conditioning was running very quietly. The only negative point was that the curtains were rather transparent. My room was heading towards an illuminated square and I couldn't darken my room reasonably.
The bathroom was very beautiful. There was a huge shower room, with a standard hand shower and an overhead shower. The toilet was optically separated by a wall. The toiletry articles were from the French brand Hermès.
I didn't have breakfast, nor did I use any of the restaurants.
The location of the hotel is not bad at all: around the hook is the famous parc "Jardin d'Essai du Hamma", the National Library and the museum "Musée National des Beaux Arts", the most important art museum in Africa. The "Musée du Moudjahid" in the famous building "Sanctuaire du Martyr" is less than 1 km away. The old city centre, with the Unesco-proteced Casbah, is 2-3 km away. The airport is around 10-15 km.
I have stayed now at all the important hotels in Algiers and overall I would prefer the Sofitel to the others. The Sheraton is very beautiful, too, but the location is not that convenient, as it is far away from the airport and not near to the city centre neither. On a next occasion I would also like to try the Hotel El-Djazaïr (former Hotel Saint-Georges), the oldest hotel in Algiers.
