Stunning Grounds!
Review of Hotel Atitlán
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Feb 2013
The Hotel Atitlan, overlooking Late Atitlan, is among Guatemala's elite core of fine hotels. It is situated in the heart of Lake Atitlan's most ethnically authentic people. It is intimate and user-friendly, elegant in a classically understated way. The decor is in the Spanish colonial-hacienda style that was favored by the Guatemlan plantation owners of the 18th century. The Atitlan offers a wide range of services and is among the most dramatic and appealing natural surroundings in the world. Nestled within the rain forest on the hotel property are special locations for serious bird watching. A short walk from the hotel is the Atitlan Nature Reserve, which has a butterfly reserve, herb gardens, suspension bridges, spider monkeys, etc.

The beautiful botanical gardens and pools of this property are what make it special. We took a morning boat cruise across Lake Atitlán, one of the world’s most beautiful lakes to visit Santiago Atitlán, an Indian villages where Mayans still wear traditional dress.. Lake Atitlan is dominated by three dormant volcanoes. This is one of the locations on our Caravan tour that we wished we could have stayed longer.

This is a truly unique place. Filled with Mayan artifacts and textiles, gorgeous botanical gardens, exotic birds, a fireplace in the room, and views of 3 volcanoes ringing the lake. The food was excellent and so was the service, all done by friendly Mayan people. They brought wood for our fireplace and helped us get it started. If you are going to Guatemala, don't miss this.

Room tip: Don't stay in the newer tower. Stay in the original hotel.

The grounds and gardens of this hotel were stunning! I was in complete awe of the beauty of the property. Loved soaking in the infinity hot-tub and looking at the lake and volcanoes around me.
The rooms are good but the grounds and view are what make the hotel incredible. I was very pleased with my stay.

One note: If traveling from Antigua, I would recommend taking motion sickness medication (just in case). I am not someone who normally suffers from motion sickness; however, I would have loved some medication for that drive (think mountains and many curves).

The room, view of the lake, food, gardens, pool and hottub all make this one of the most pleasant stays I've had in quite some time, and all at a reasonable price! If you're looking for a romantic getaway for two to relax by the pool, just be sure to avoid going during the holidays...it's nice that the hotel is so family-friendly, but the place can get quite overrun.

Room tip: All the rooms have a balcony out to the lake, I'd recommend a room on the second floor for a better view.

Take one of the most beautiful settings in the world (Lake Atitlan), add a hotel with warm wood tones and color-filled gardens, and you have a dream setting for a wedding. The hotel staff was amazing - anticipating all our needs. Food and service were professional and well executed. We danced, ate, and danced some more - all for a very reasonable price. We did not stay at the hotel but will next time.

While the rooms, restaurant and service are all good at the Atitlan; the views and the grounds are superlative. This makes the place extremely special. Panajachel is not a particularly beautiful town but is interesting, the hotel on the other hand is worth a stay. This would definitely be where we'd stay if we were in the area again.
