My boyfriend and I chose to use the Rudee Inlet to rent Jet Skis on our recent vacation to Virginia Beach. We had found the company through a visitor's guide and went with them because of the convenient location. We brought the ad with us, to double check on times and rental offers provided. As we stepped up to the booth, the young girl working the rental stand almost instantly pointed out that the coupon in the visitor's guide could not be used today (it was a weekend). No welcome, no friendly greeting. It certainly put me off and I was a bit embarrassed for having accidentally brought the coupon. Once we decided on the package we wanted, we were quickly ushered to sign damage and injury waivers (none were thoroughly explained). We were told to keep a copy in our jet ski, in case the cops pulled us over. I'm not quite sure why the police would pull us over in the first place, for this was never discussed. The rental staff just didn't cut it for me. I work in customer service, and I am sure that these associates have to deal with their fair share of morons. However, they were simply rude and short with the visitors that were (for the most part) fist-time jet ski riders. The tour guide yelled at us impatiently because we were not following him in a single file line. We were led out to the ocean to ride, but were not instructed on a set time to meet the group at the boat. At the conclusion of our half hour, the tour guide used his jet ski to furiously hunt us down to tell us we were heading back. As we were approaching the dock to park the jet skis on the floating pad, we were instructed off the fly to accelerate fast enough to launch the machine on the mat. A man of Oriental decent didn't understand the quick directions and moved too slowly to maneuver the machine into park mode. I am not exaggerating; the staff member screamed at him. He even remarked, "These are expensive machines and that's how they get damaged!" By the end of our hour, we could not leave fast enough. The jet ski rental was awesome; however, the price was outrageous even for a summer island company. It came to about two hundred dollars to rent two jet skis for thirty minutes. The service, however, is the real reason that I strongly discourage anyone to visit. The staff seem bothered to explain technicalities and frustrated with people who do not ride every day. Great ride, terrible service!
