“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2008

We spent one night in this hotel while we took a weekend visit to the beautiful city of Sopron.
The receptionist was very polite and they showed us several rooms to choose from.
We voted for one of the superior rooms and it was a good choice.
The room was smooth and big enough.
The pool section was almost empty and in good condition so we had a good time there too.
The variety of food was ok.
The whole building is very fancy.
I can honestly advise this hotel to anyone.

“4 star?? Rooms need serious updating...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2008

I stayed here for a business conference last week. The business facilities were good enought but the room decor was just awful. The room (510 I think) was small and very outdated. OK, it's Hungary and the hotel is supposed to be 100 years old but this hotel cannot be a 4 star one. Food was good, decor downstairs was good. There's even a dentist there for the Austrians who come over to Hungary for a cheap check-up. Ok experience but I would stay elsewhere...

“An enchanting place”

My wife and I went on an extended vacation of several countries in Europe. One of the last ones was Hungary. Our first city was Sopron as we were driving from Vienna. Sopron itself is a very beautiful place. It's a small city full of history and with many beautiful monuments.

Our first stop was the Pannonia hotel. To us it was quite impressive. It would look like an Italian Palazzo transformed into a hotel. You really feel like royalty there.

The room were very comfortable, the bathroom modern and in general we found nothing to critizice. The reception was very pleasant. Gabor, the receptionist was most helpful and he gave us a lecture on the old Hungary and the new one. As an introduction to the typical Hungarian person, he was the best exponent. We were to find many many people like him in our next 5 days driving through Budapest and small town Hungary: interesting, polite, engaging and friendly.

Any regrets? Yes, that we didn't stay longer at the Pannonia.

We will go back.

“A nice stay in atmospheric surroundings, with some flaws”

The hotel is ideally located on the ring road circling the old town. Sopron is a nice little town with a wealth of local museums, some of them quite impressive (try the archeological museum and the 18th century flat conserved in the same building).
The hotel is a large building in 19th century Grand Hotel style, somewhat faded (carpets etc. in the public spaces), with nice chandeliers and grand halls. The room (booked as single, but it was a spacious double with two single beds) looked recently (re)done, the reproduction furniture was rather on the cheap side, the bed was good, the neighbors audible. Bath and room were clean (although the drapes were already faded), the aircondition was noisy and without much effect.
Dinner at the restaurant (the most expensive option I encountered in Sopron) left me with mixed impression: an excellent starter was followed with a main course with excellent sauce and accompaniment, but rather stringy venison. Breakfast (included) was the standard buffet affair, but with lots of fruit.
Service was very friendly (especially booking via telephone and check in), but not all local information I obtained at front desk was correct (I was looking for a bus to the nearby Spa-village of Balf and was directed to the main bus station across town, but the bus, I accidently discovered, actually left near the hotel...).
There are several fitness and Spa options at the hotel that I did not try.

“Loved the hotel and the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2005

BW Pannonia hotel is centrally located on the main shopping street of this small charming city. All major sights are within 5-10 minutes walking distance from the hotel. The historic nucleus of the city, its beautiful old town, begins almost across the road and is confined to a ralatively small area surrounded by medieval fortress walls. The old town can be covered on foot within 1 hour, unless you decide to devote more time to some of the city's numerous museums.

We were staying in the antique suite which was extremely spacious and had its own exit to the inner garden. The room had all sorts of antique furniture, columns and a huge window covering the entire lenght of the wall. The bathroom was spacious, clean and comfortable.

The hotel is lavishly decorated in a pronounced Austro-Hungarian style and, in our opinion, manages to reproduce some of the atmosphere of the dual monarchy. I wouldn't say that the public areas and the room in which we were staying were impaccably clean, because they were not. On the other hand, we understand the difficulty in maintaining such an old property and most of its antique attributes in an impeccably clean state. A rather generous breakfast was served in a beautiful dining hall where all lavish implements of the Austro-Hungarian era were present. I understand that the local Rotary foundaion holds its regular meetings in a hall adjacent to the dining hall.

The hotel offers all customary features you would normally expect from a four-star hotel. However, we did not visit the jakuzzi, sauna or the work-out facilities. The personnel was most helpful and ready to give you all sorts of information and directions. If we were to stay in the beatiful city of Sopron again, BW Pannonia would definitely be our choice!
