My boyfriend and I stayed at Hotel Sunlight for three nights in December 2006. Booked as a flights/hotel package with Easy Jet, it was amazingly cheap!
Hotel looked a bit grim on arrival (large, grey and Soviet style) but was clean and comfortable. We had a basic twin room several floors up and for most of our stay may well have been the only guests! Also had a balcony with an amazing view down over the city and the river which was especially nice when it snowed.
Breakfast was good, lots of meat and cheese, but was cleared up early every morning - it was definitely best to get there early....
Some staff seemed surly initially but turned out to be more than helpful. They opened the bar just for us and were excellent in booking taxis and recommending things to see. One employee's father gave us a lift down into town which was very generous of him but scarily fast!
The hotel is on a hill above the city, definitely not walking distance into town but the regular bus service passes just below the hotel. If you use the bus it seems to be a given that you have already bought a tram ticket and therefore don't have to pay. Confusing at first but great! Restaurant about a quarter of a mile down the hill was lovely.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Sunlight - possibly the least sunny place i've ever been but great value for money and a fascinating place to stay!
