“ideal ski location for beginners and families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

just returned from ski holiday and was pleasently surprised with this hotel. Having read numerous reviews saying food was poor and hotel noisy we were really pleased with the whole package. Bearing in mind what you are paying compared with other ski resorts we found this to be great value and an ideal location for families and ski beginners. The food was good with different choices of meat and fish dishes each night and different kids food each day. Breakfasts were the same each day ( what big hotel is not?) but never the less lots of choice. Rooms were clean but did lack a bath and tea making facilities, we had room with great view of the slopes. Looking at other hotels the Larix is the best placed in the town as is right at the bottom of the slopes and you can literally ski to the hotel back door. Quite a few children ar resort but we went at half term so was to be expected. Boot room was downstairs, bit of a pain but soon got used to going up steps in ski boots and compensated by the fact that there was no walk to slopes as right outside of door. Friendly helpful ski instructors, snow machines, helpful staff in hotel.
Lovely pool and jacuzzi looking out on slopes but busy between 4-6pm when slopes closed for maintanance.
would recommend the husky riding although quite pricey but excellent fun.
all in all a great resort for families and beginners but perhaps not for more advanced skiers although there were some black runs (not that i was ready for them!)

“Fantastic skiing holiday in Kranjska Gora”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

Just got back from a fantastic skiing holiday in Kranjska Gora staying at the Larix Hotel. I had read a few bad reviews about the Larix on Trip Advisor so was not expecting much but how wrong could I be. I found the hotel to be very comfortable with modern furnishings, lovely log fire and very clean. The location is superb, right next to slopes and across the road from the shops and bars. We had a room overlooking the front road but never found it too noisy. The only small complaint we had was one of the bedrooms did smell of tobacco smoke but we were offered another room with no trouble. The bathroom in our room was slightly on the smaller side with not a lot of space to put toiletries but super shower and loads of hot water. The food was excellent and there was always something really good on the menu. We are definitely going to book this hotel again in December. We have previously skied in France, Italy and Andorra but found this resort so friendly and accesable although for hard core skiers there is not enough kilometres.

If anyone is thinking of having ski lessons I can recommend the Kekec ski school which is located next to the 4 man chairlift outside the Larix. Ask for Roc, he is the best teacher I have ever had and has got me skiing from snowplough turns to carving on red runs in 4 hours. He has the most lovely manner, very calming and easy to understand his instruction. You can hire equipment from here too and they also have a snack bar next door.

“Leaves much to be desired!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

Initially the 3 of us were placed in a tiny room, overlooking the pub with the late bar. The helpful desk manager spontaneously knocked on our door and offered us a larger room. This was an improvement, but reeked of smoke. The desk manager promised a better room for us which would be the following day and was as good as his word.

The evening meal was a shocker, not helped by the refusal to offer us non-bottled water (in spite of the potable tap water, provided for by the considerable annual rainfall). There was no wine list, although we were assured that the wine was "very nice". The food was poor (and I have to say that I am accustomed to e. European food). I slept badly due to the pub and looked forward to breakfast, which is difficult to get wrong!

Oh dear! Powdered coffee from a machine and none of that nice crusty baguette/semmel that we so like. Really undercooked bacon every day and gristly sausages. The fried eggs were ok. Did I mention the coffee? It was awful! Dining room staff were sparse and a tad brusque, but that may be due to being under staffed.

Our new room was a great improvement, but still overlooked the pub and it's vociferous patrons!

4 stars? Absolutely not (no end of minibars pools, dressing gowns and slippers can turn this into a 4 star!) Get some coffee beans and do a deal with the local baker, please! The it might be 3 stars. Perhaps standards are higher for the winter season? Who knows? I'll not be back!

“Kranjska Gora - Hotel Larix and area hard to beat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

We recently stayed at the hotel Larix in Kranjska Gora (June 2010) myself and a friend; two ladies in our sixties who love walking. We travelled with ‘Balkan Holidays’ (good value) on a 10 day half board package. What a perfect location for walkers and cyclists, surrounded by mountains and crystal clear rivers and lakes and unbelievably beautiful wild flower meadows. Hotel Larix is a modern hotel close to the centre of the village. Our room was of a reasonable size and very clean and comfortable, (no tea making facility though!). We had opted not to pay the extra cost of having a balcony and mountain view, which we found to be ok as the views all around are beautiful. The food was very good with a huge selection of hot and cold buffet style food at both breakfast and dinner; you would have to be a very funny eater not to have found something to your taste! There’s a great indoor pool and hot tub with views of the mountains whilst you swim. The staff were very friendly and the reception staff extremely helpful with regard to bus and train time tables in order to visit such as Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj (beautiful) and Ljubljana; a less expensive option to do it yourself than the tour operators trips! If you go to Bohinj to walk, catch the bus from the bridge to the other end of the lake (as suggested on an internet site as the south side is not that interesting) then walk back along the north side; I thought I was in heaven – magic! If you intend walking around Kranjska Gora, do buy a local map (6.50 euros) rather expensive but very useful. On the back of the map there are route details of many numbered walks – although most details are too brief! There are clear numbered route posts, these I might add are limited at strategic points and leave an awful lot to be desired often (believe it or not) pointing you in the wrong direction, and it wasn’t just us, all walkers we came across had the same complaint, also some of the routes were closed in places adding to the confusion. However the holiday overall was absolutely wonderful and I can’t recommend it highly enough for anyone who has the energy and enjoys the beautiful mountain scenery

“Good - ISH hotel but not 4*”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2010

Stayed in the Larix for a week.

Room was actually a suprise, very big with a small living area and seperate bedroom. Clean and quite cosy.

Didn't use the casino but did use the swimming pool which was very good, apart from the lack of an outdoor one which would of made it a little better. Still, very good and big enough to have some space to yourself without feeling squashed.

Now, the letdown - the meals. Breakfast was OK-ish, but nowhere near the quailtiy to expect from four star hotel. Edible, compared to dinner...quite bad to say the least. Very disappointing. Spent a fortune stocking up on snacks to keep us full throughout the day.

Yes, pretty village but if i went back next time i would stay in the hotel across the road!
