We loved the beautiful Savic Hotel in Prague. The location is perfect; just around the corner from the Old Town square (gorgeous Christmas market and stunning gothic Church of Tyn) and a short walk to the Charles Bridge (Karluv most). Our family stayed in rooms 207 and 208 for 4 nights in mid December '11. The rooms are very spacious and have huge double glazed french windows opening to the little street below. The Queen room had a lovely four poster bed. It was extremely comfortable. The bathrooms, with shower over the bath, were luxurious and spacious. The rooms have mini fridges, very good sized televisions (CNN & BBC World).
A Nespresso machine (not great for making tea!) is also provided. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the breakfast selections varied and delicious.
When you visit the hilltop Palace and St Vitus Cathedral it is an easy walk across Charles Bridge then continue on the same road, Mostecka, to Malostranske Namesti (a square in the vicinity of the front of St Nicholas Church). Here you can catch a tram up to the Palace complex (need to buy a daily transport ticket from a Tabak shop first). The view over Prague from the hill where the palace complex is situated is stunning.
If you need a taxi ask the hotel to call their taxi drivers as they are much cheaper. Also if you need to go to the main station to purchase train tickets in advance go during the day and walk back as a taxi from outside the station at night was very expensive.
Train from Prague to Salzburg (change at Linz) was a great experience.
