“Much better I was expecting...”

The hotel is overall very nice. The facade of the building is not very welcoming. Reception is also very small, but the room we got was actually quite large (for European standards). Comfortable, nicely decorated, good clean bathroom. I could not ask for anything better considering the price of the room. Breakfast was nice, but they do close on the dot even if you are still in the restaurant... great views from the restaurant.

Hotel is very close to the historical old town, reception very nice and helpful.

I would stay there again if in Cuenca...

“Good budget hotel in the centre of Cuenca”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

We went to Cuenca for a last minute weekend get away from Madrid. Got a double room for about 55 euros which was excellent value. The hotel was situated in the main town of Cuenca (not the historic city) but this actually worked better for us as we were driving down from Madrid which meant that it was easier to park outside the hotel. If you go for the weekend there is ample free parking in the street outside the hotel although if parking during the week it may be harder although there is a private car park to the side of the hotel which charges about EUR13 per day to park.

It was a short walk from the hotel to the city via the parador, although the roads are steep and it makes for a tiring weekend with all the walking. You can probably get a bus nearby but we walked everywhere. The historic city itself was fantastic with plenty to keep you occupied for a day or 2. The scenery was beautiful too.

The hotel itself was basic but the rooms were spacious with good quality TVs, a fridge, huge wardrobe, safe, air con and well equipped bathrooms (the shower was fantastic!). The room was also spotlessly clean, which was the most important thing for us. I suspect some rooms have a good view out to the city, although our room looked directly at a wall on either side. There is a restaurant on the top floor which again has good views although we did not eat here given the prices are quite high and there is an abundance of good restaurants nearby. There is also a nice park directly opposite the hotel.

The only downside was the check in process where at one point I thought they were going to refuse to let us stay in the hotel as I only had my driving license as ID and not my passport. A minor thing that was probably more my fault than that of the hotel, but it was a little stressful.

Overall though this was a good value hotel for the price with spacious and clean rooms and a good location.

“A fine city-centre hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2011

We needed a hotel in Cuenca for a single-night stay. Trip Advisor suggested the Alfonso VIII would suit, and so it did. Within easy reach of old Cuenca on foot, with a green park opposite the hotel and within a few yards of one of the main commercial streets, it is ideally and agreeably situated for a tourist. The accommodation is quite spacious, comfortable, very clean and adequately furnished, remembering that at the price charged, this is at the 'budget' end of the list of hotels in Cuenca. The single adverse comment is that although the room window was double-glazed, it did not keep out all of the sound of the late night (3am) street conversationalist! Maybe rooms at the rear of the hotel, without a view over the park, would be more suitable for light sleepers.
In short, we have good memories of our time at the Alfonso VIII.

Room Tip: Get room at rear for a good night's sleep

“The basement apartment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2010

The only good thing I can say about this room there was no road noise. The plumbing kept us awake most of the night, it was like sleeping next to a waterfall every time the toilet was flushed from the 6 apartments above us we knew about it. The bedhead was for a 4 foot bed and as we had two single beds pushed together my husband only had half a bed head. There was no view of any sort from the windows therefore the rooms were dark and dingy and the shower curtain rail around the tiny bath kept falling down whenever it was touched. Lovely towels though. And all for 90 Euros a night !
