Disappointed and not as advertised. We found the unit on first appearance to be attractive and clean. The advertised website was for “tea, sugar and milk”, “bath gel, shampoo and conditioner”, “candles provided” and “inviting efficient kitchen (all essential equipment)”.
Our first concern was finding no milk in the fridge to make a basic cup of tea, much needed after a long and tiring drive. We were assured by the caretaker that this was an oversight, and was shortly rectified. However one of the coffee mugs had a lovely brown stain and splashes inside it, suggesting that it had not been washed or had an unwashed spoon sitting in it before being stored away. Not nice, but not the end of the world so we used our own travel mugs. We were later informed by the caretaker that the coffee stain was possibly discoloured water having come down the side of the sink and into the cup. Whilst we still consider it was a coffee stain, it is a concern if you have water seeping down the side of the sink onto crockery, and nothing had been done to rectify this . After a walk around town, time to cook dinner, and have a nice glass of wine from Coonawarra. Well the wine glasses were greasy, one had a red mark on it (lipstick perhaps) and did not appear to have either been well washed and/or dried. We found most other glassware to be in the same state. Again, we resorted to our own utensils given concerns at the overall cleanliness. Now we appreciate that the unit is self catering but we were surprised to find that there were no basics not even salt and pepper. Then to the microwave, well on first appearances it was clean but the top of the inside had signs of food that had not been cleaned off. OK again maybe an oversight. Then to do the dishes, well, we had just enough dishwashing liquid for one lot of dishes and nothing left after that to clean the morning’s round of dishes and no dish drainer. Maybe that explained the greasy glassware that we had found – someone else did not have enough detergent to adequately clean up. So then to have a nice bath but there was no bath gel, OK, we can survive without that. The next question, where are the tissues? None provided, later we were told that that was also an oversight. Then we decided to have a look and see what constituted candles, another interesting twist. There was an old fashioned candle holder with lots of candle wax on it, a quarter stub of an already burnt candle and a taper candle, perhaps they were for use should the electricity go out because they certainly would not enhance any romantic scene setting. And after all that, the shower dripped all night. So adding all these oversights and lack of cleanliness of previous occupants, we felt genuinely disappointed. On pondering we felt that we needed to raise concerns and had hoped to speak to the owner, but instead we dealt with the caretaker. The initial response over the phone was reassuring, and we were told that we should have contacted her when things weren’t as we had expected. Yes we could have done that, but at what point would we have needed to keep phoning, and the point is we shouldn’t have needed to phone. After breakfast out, we returned to finalise payment and to more fully discuss our concerns. Well the tone of the conversation did not broker well. There was acknowledgement that the glass ware was not clean, a view that the kitchen sink must have dripped into the coffee cup and that there had been a different cleaner that explained why things had been missed. She had spoken to the owner who offered a $10 reduction on the room rate. But when we raised the issue of lack of some of the basics, it became obvious that the caretaker had decided that we were “THAT type of people”, obviously people who are complainers, perhaps to get a reduced price? Well that inflamed the situation realising that in the absence of speaking to the owner, our concerns were considered trivial, were unlikely to be conveyed and we were considered the problem. We hope our experience was an aberration, and the same won’t be experienced by other travellers.
