“Good facilities, shame about the room and hotel decor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I agree with other reviewers that the environment and facilities are very good. However, the decor is quite tired. The reception areas are painted a garish red and yellow and have paintings on the walls guaranteed to scare young children (? extra terrestrials?). The decor in the accommodation blocks with pale tiles made it look like a toilet block. Our room was extremely small with no room to unpack suit cases. Breakfast was ok although not many choices of healthy cereals and only butter available (no margarine) which failed to cater for people on cardiac or low fat diets. For this, we paid $240ish a night which I was told was a good rate! On the other hand, the lap pool, gym and other available leisure activities were excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful, contrary to some other reports. The hotel was in an excellent location on the beach in a tranquil garden setting with large grassed areas (although the multitude of ducks made walking across the grass a bit like walking through a mine field in trying to avoid the duck poo!). All in all, ok but expensive and not a patch on some of the Asian hotels.

Room Tip: Would advise couples to upgrade to a one bedroom appartment

“5 star location, 3 star accommodation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We stayed at the Mantra Erskine for 1 night. Initial impressions were positive, a number of facilities such as a spa, pool, gym etc and a nice reception area. It is a fairly large complex so quite busy, so busy that someone had parked in our allocated car space so we were forced to find another car park elsewhere. This is despite you having to display your room number on the dashboard, however this obviously is not policed. Room was a decent size, we stayed in a 1 bedroom with a living area and kitchen that had a large fridge, pots and pans, cutlery etc. provided. I would have to agree with some of the other reviews here, on the outset the resort looks fantastic, but up close it is starting to look quite shabby. For instance, walls had a number of scuff marks and the entrances to the rooms seemed to look the most tired. I also have questions around the cleanliness standards, our bedroom looked clean enough and the bathroom looked fine too, however when I went to use the toilet, there were skid marks at the bottom which doesn't create a great first impression when you have just checked in! We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food, however limited room service is provided. On a positive note, the resort is very conveniently located with direct beach access and is also walking distance to the main shops and cafes on the main street of Lorne. I also think that the resort is a little overpriced, I would have expected a bit more on the cleanliness side of things given the Mantra branding. If you are looking for a quiet getaway place, probably not the right choice in the middle of summer as it is busy and bustling, but I think it would be a good place to stay as a family or with friends, provided they improve their cleanliness standards.

“A good place but not great.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

A good 4 star resort for families.

What makes it a good place is the open space, grass area including tennis courts, croquet, mini golf. Fantastic in summer but i can't imagine it would be as inviting in winter.

We went on the long weekend and paid top dollar for a one bedroom apartment $379 which is very expensive for what it was. (but we paid it as it was a long weekend and wanted to go away)

We went with our two kids, thinking they would sleep on the pull out couch ... well if you can imagine lying wire cables on the floor then lying a sheet over it that's what it felt like! Fortunately the king size bed was comfortable. So Don't stay there with the intension of using the fold out couch!

Kitchen facilities i think were fine. We actually didn't cook there. We only made our breakfast in the apartment.

I suggest get a garden view as ours was considered garden view and we could still see the ocean. Some of the ocean front rooms were facing the ocean but as there are trees in the way you can't actually see the ocean very well! Don't stay in the standard ones, they were just looking over driveways or other buildings. The best asset of the hotel was the big grass area and open space, so get one where you watch the action!

We did swim in the indoor pool. It was a good temperature. kids liked it.

Overall, It is rated as 4.5 star resort. I would not of thought this! At most a 4 star!

The thing I need to remember a 4 or 5 star resort in Asia is far superior to any 4 or 5 star resort in Australia.

Room Tip: Choose a garden view room and Don't intend on using the fold out sofa bed for sleeping!

“Disappointing not 4.5* standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Initial impression on entering this property looks very nice & the reception area & lounge is very well furnished and of 4.5* quality BUT ... very disappointed with the accommodation and standard for the price and rating. We stayed on 30th January in a one bedroom apartment in Thomas building overlooking the bowling green which had a nice view. The public access by the lifts was very grubby. The room needed a lot of attention ie; dirty duvet cover with lipstick stains, grubby walls, filthy window sills and skirtings, cobwebs from ceiling, mould around bath, shared kitchen cupboard/clothes hanging area!!! toilet holder falling off wall. This is definitely overrated which is a pity as the location is excellent and the grounds are lovely. It is very convenient to the shopping area. We didn't use the dining facilities so can't comment on that but we had dinner at the Ovenhouse Restaurant across the road which we highly recommend for excellent service and food. A great pity about this resort as it is a rip off price for the condition of the rooms. You would expect more attention to detail & cleanliness for a 4.5* rating. Unfortunately I can't recommend this resort.

“Bit tired, therefore overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

With a 4.5 star rating on the discount booking site we used, my expectations were for something less tired and grubby looking. I really think stained couches, doors that won't stay on their tracks and grimey, un mopped floors (particularly in the public areas) should count against this property. Can't beat the location but the high pricing implied better.
Even the synthetic grass tennis courts (2) were torn on the base line. (a wonderful tripping hazard!!) We found the loud automated industrial strength exhaust fan shafts that run from the bathrooms above the main bed a strange arrangement. Kept the bathrooms smelling fresh, but awkward and often in use with 3 of us sharing. Our first night call to complain about the noise (we couldn't hear the TV over it!) to the reception desk met with surprise and a suggestion that upstairs might be using the spa. At the time this seemed likely even at 11.00pm. The staff were friendly, very helpful and saved what was less than the luxurious stay, we expected.

Room Tip: We used the sofa bed in a one bedroom unit for a third person and found the blinds (there are no cur...
