My Husband and I spent 2 night for our first wedding anniversary at Peppers in early Dec 2011. We weren't expecting anything fantastic initially, but I have to admit that Peppers service was beyond our expectations. I would have to rate them second in QLD for service next to Palazzo Versace's at the Gold Coast. For the price range, they are definitely streaks ahead for anything else we have ever stayed at.
From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and couldn't help enough. The reception was impressive and the view is lovely. Yes, the road to reception is steep and the area is hilly, but Airlie Beach is a hilly town so if you are too lazy to walk it then I suggest utilising the courtesy bus and golf cart that Peppers has available. Don't let peoples 'horror stories' of the hill turn you off this place!
When we arrived at our room, the a/c was already on and the room was at a lovely temperature. The room was lovely and modern with a great outlook to the water. We were treated with a visit from half a dozen white cockatoo's who perched on our balcony for about 20 minutes. The spa bath was amazing and we spent all night the first night sitting and chatting in the tub with a bottle of champagne and a platter. Unfortunately the spa overheated twice (design flaw with the pump having no ventilation in the cupboard) but it held up pretty good considering the length of time we had it running!
We had one other issue where the air conditioners stopped working the first night. As it was the wee early hours of the morning (3am), we decided to wait until a more suitable time to call to reception, although the desk is manned 24/7. On advising reception at 8.00am of the spa and the a/c fault, they immediately offered us a room swap. I declined and requested maintenance attend. I received a call at 8.55am to say maintenance had managed to fix the a/c for us, and sure enough when we returned to our room later that morning, the a/c was working. After returning again after lunch that afternoon, we found it had stopped working again.
I rang to reception and they immediately arranged a new room for us, upgraded us to a two bedroom apartment, and arranged for someone to help move our luggage. We settled in to the new room and just as we poured a glass of champagne there was a knock at the door. One of the girls from reception presented us with a cheese platter and apologised profusely for the inconvenience of having to change rooms. Her timing was impeccable as they had given us enough time to settle in and unpack, but not too long that it was an inconvenience to answer the door. It was a little painful to have the a/c stop working but the staff made the whole ordeal seamless and were very pleasant and helpful throughout the whole process.
The beds are lovely and comfy and the rooms are spacious with a well equipped kitchen. The spa bath is HUGE and the bathroom accessories supplied are lovely.
We had dinner the second night at the Tides restaurant and were entertained by a massive eletrical storm. Sitting at the open air elevated restaurant, we had the best view of all the lightening and enjoyed a lovely breeze blowing in off the ocean. The food was devine but it is '5 star dining' so if you prefer a cheaper meal then I would recommend eating in town. However, true foodies will love Tides!
The pool looked amazing although we didn't get time to enjoy it, and the Endota spa onsite has a great array of massage packages available.
It really is the attention to detail and great customer service that puts Peppers ahead of the rest. It is one thing to have a lovely clean room but it's a whole different level to be treated like the only guests even though they are fully booked.
We wouldn't hesitate in staying here again and I am already looking in to staying at another Peppers resort in the Hunter Valley for our second wedding anniversary. Thanks to all the team for making it 'the best weekend since our honeymoon' (quoted from my Husband!). It really was perfection!
Room Tip: Request a spa room with views towards town for the best view of the ocean.
