My wife and I stayed at this property over New Year, 2011-2012 for 7 nights. This is a very nice hotel and we would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. The location on Playa Bonita is oustanding. We walked several miles on the beach each day and once about .5 miles west of the hotel, did not encounter many others for great stretches. There are several hotels and resorts right in the vicinity of Playa Bonita, but there are very few to the west on Playa Coson. Daily breakfasts are tasty, but the included menu is limited. It got repetitive after 7 days. This is not a complaint, just an observation. The staff is very helpful and remembered our drink preferences easily. We did not eat any other meals at the hotel other than breakfast. We did have drinks and desert in the evenings and found that delightful. Our adult-aged kids also enjoyed the bar at night and had a fun evening of dancing by the beach.
A couple comments relating to our room.
We were in a garden view room along the back of the property and next to the road and adjacent neighborhood.
Our room was clean and the daily cleaning appropriate.
There is quite a bit of noise from the road, particularly the ATVs that seem to be proliferating in Las Terrenas. To me, ATVs are jet skis on land and need to be banned. There can be noise from the houses in the adjacent neighborhood. They seem to have loud parties. But it was only a problem on one night. Otherwise, it seemed to quite down by 11 pm or so.
I don't know if it was the time of year, but we experienced more insect bites than in prior visits. The room had mosquito netting, which you must use. Even so, I got mosquito and other bites. Apparently from a small flying insect called a "jejenes." In Florida, they are called "no see ums". However, my wife had virtually no bites of any kind. It seemed to be that way for others too. On person in each group seemed to be the target and others got away with no bites.
We chartered a bus to El Limon waterfall and enjoyed the trip, but it was too much for my 70 year old parents. It is quite an challeging 45 hike. Horses can help the trip, but itis still challening to hold onto a horse on the steep ups and downs. The staff at the desk made the arrangements and I would recommend you let them handle it rather than trying to do it on your own. There are many entrepenuers at El Limon and you need to decided how much you want to spend. The horse is $5 each way and a guide about $15. I would not do the guide if we went back. There are many people on the path and it is fairly easy to see where to go.
We walked to Supermercado Leon, which is about 1 mile from the hotel on the corner of the main road in. This is a useful store. There is a new liquor store next door now too.
The dive shop on site has very friendly and helpful staff and you can rent boogie boards. We did not dive, but saw them go out a couple days. The waves seemed to be better to the right or east of the hotel, in the area of the surf shop.
If you want a small hotel on a great beach, this is a great choice. If you are going to Las Terrenas, this is a great choice too. Enjoy.
