The Cathedral Inn is no more than a 5 minute walk from the centre of Nelson, yet it is so peaceful most of the time that all we heard were the birds (being from Auckland, we were very excited to hear a morepork one night!) The walk itself is along paths through the beautiful grounds of Nelson Cathedral, and we noticed that Nelson's not called the City of Trees for nothing!
Our room - in fact the whole place - was immaculately clean and comfortable with lots of small thoughtful touches, like the mint bowl in the hallway (in which there was one less each time I passed it!) and the tray of aperitifs in the lounge.
The cooked breakfasts were prepared with great care and presented with a small fresh flower on every plate. The pancakes and French toast (not together ...!) were delicious, but after realising I would soon have to buy bigger clothes if I carried on, I chose the omelette option. Omelettes can be hard to get just right, but Neville's were consistently excellent.
It was very obvious that Sally and Neville work extremely hard to make sure everything is perfect and take the comfort of their guests very seriously. We were there for a week and when we left they gave us a hug and said they'd miss us.
I can only say that I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers who have given the place an 'Excellent' rating. It may be a while before we get back to Nelson but I would definitely stay there again if I could.
