My wife and I stumbled across Nikau by chance due to lack of availability of all other Backpacker/Budget accomodation in Nelson. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Although we arrived after the reception opening hours, the host Jacqui was happy to come and meet us after hours. The self contained accommodation, whilst small, easily accommodated a double bed (the most comfortable we have ever slept on), storage facilities, writing table, dining table, kitchenette and good sized bathroom.
Proximity to town was brilliant, an easy and safe 3 minute walk to the heart of the retail and restaraunt precincts, art galleries, pubs, Saturday Farmers Markets. We stayed over what was a long weekend and yet not once did we have any noise disturbance from students in the adjoining rooms or accommodation blocks.
Overall, the accommodation was top value for money and I would be happy recommending it to couples or singles travelling on a budget.
Two other tips if you are in Nelson:
- try the "authentic" Pad Thai at the Golden Bell Restaurant
- if you're looking for a wine tour, Bay Tours were exceptional. Roy, our driver and owner of the business was an absolute champion.
