“Nothing exciting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2009

This hotel is located at Pialba at the northern end of Hervey Bay. The marina and boats for whale watching and Fraser Island are located at the other (southern) end. However, most tours pick-up from all hotels so this is not too much of an issue except that you are one of the first to be picked up and amongst the last to be dropped off at the end. You can simply walk across the street in front of the hotel and across some grass to get to the beach where there are plenty of shells for the kids to collect and the camel rides go past.

Reception was friendly, with a fridge full of cold drinks for sale. They are also able to book tours for you and have a supply of pamphlets and brochures for local attractions and tours.

The room we had was on the second floor with a view across a park. The room itself was quite big although we noticed during out stay that they rooms on the ground level appeared to be somewhat smaller. Our room had a queen bed and a single bed, a table and two chairs, two armchairs, a flat screen TV, a bar fridge, tea and coffee facilities, large bathtub with shower. The hotel had a small, unheated outdoor pool including a spa seat.

A small gripe I had was that I dropped some potato chips on the floor one night and the crumbs were still there two days later. I thought that they would be vacuumed up during the daily service. Also, on the first day our room wasn't serviced at all.

Overall, the hotel seemed OK but I felt it was slightly overpriced for what it offered, as was other accommodation in the area.

Other points
Personally, I did not care for any of the beaches at Hervey Bay as they are on tidal flats, which I do not enjoy walking on and at low tide you have to walk out quite a way and at high tide it still isn’t very deep. Additionally, there are no waves. This would probably be good for people who like their beaches calm and shallow, people with small children or possibly fishermen.

A day trip to Fraser Island is well worth it especially if you get to float down Eli Creek and swim at Lake McKenzie. The rainforest and tall trees are also a sight to behold. The lunch at Eurong Beach Resort was plentiful and better than the previous time I visited there 18 years ago.

Whale watching is another trip you may want to go on. We saw several whales although they were mainly floating, swimming, or diving and coming up for air. No jumping or breaching so not all that exciting. Most of the kids enjoyed themselves just running around the boat. Don’t forget to take sunblock, a hat and a jumper/sweater/jacket even when it is hot on shore. Most people on our boat got extremely cold in the wind out of the sun as they forgot to bring something warm with them.

“Large rooms”

We needed a one night stay before a flight from Hervey Bay airport. We picked this hotel based on the trust of BW. It did not disappoint. It is across the road from the ocean and near a mall (which closes by 5.30). The staff were very warm and helpful. We had a nice meal in the restaurant. It was fairly quiet and easy to sleep in the comfy bed. The room was large and clean with coffee, fridge and TV.

“Very Friendly Small Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2007

The Ambassador Motor Lodge is better than it sounds, it certainly exceeded my expectations. It's more of a Hotel, with a Kitchenette, and I loved it.

The Front Desk staff are helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble. They are very well-informaed about whats on in Hervey Bay. I wanted to book a trip to Fraiser Island, and it was no problem, they even recommended a cafe for me to visit on the Island.

The location is central, right on the main strip of Hervey Bay. It is quite small (about 20 rooms) -- but i loved it! We made friends with another couple by the pool, and enjoyed the beautiful sauna. For a small Hotel, it has great facilities. I liked the fact that it was quiet, it made us feel more welcome, and the frontdesk staff knew us by name, which is always nice.

The Restaurant is amazing. Really nice, with super breakfasts too. We planned on eating out, but stayed in at the Lodge most nights. They had a stong Air Con, which was good for us Kiwis who aren't used to the hot weather.

It may not be the most up-to-date hotel, but it is really nice, and a great end to our holiday.

“Good location, good hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2007

We stayed 4 nights here at the end of July, 07. Check-in was quick and painless, office staff friendly and willing to help. The room was big and roomy, with a queen bed and a single. Not the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, but passable. Spare pillows and blankets were in the cupboard. It had a small fridge, TV, small table and chairs and a lounge chair. There was a bit of noise through the interconnecting door from the room next door, and some rumbling on the walkway outside when the cleaners were on the go, but generally very quiet. Not bad considering this was the busy time of year, the hotel was fully booked each night.

Quiet location on the esplanade, but no views of the water because of the scrub growth sheltering the beach. 2 minute walk to a couple of restaurants and a large supermarket, 5 minute walk to the RSL (gaming / restaurant). There was room service and a restaurant on site with a good menu at reasonable prices, but we didn't eat there.

Bathroom was a bit tired, but clean. Plumbing could do with a bit of work as you heard it when the rooms either side flushed or had a shower! A minor negative........

There was an in-house movie advertised each night, but unless you rang the reception to ask when it was starting, there was a good chance it wouldn't be started - the only other negative we encountered during our stay.
