We felt welcome the moment we walked in and the room was as promised in the reception, small but clean with thick towels and very hot shower. All for $70. Tv, microwave and even friendly cat Sparky! Bed had slats so was better & firmer than the usual terrible motel soft. Homely courtyard and quiet. Good directions to eating places already pinned up on a noticeboard in the room, the management is organised. "Town" is about 15 mins walk away and there is the fancy White Morph restaurant in between.

Please note that this review was posted in November 2010 when the property was known as Maxton's-on-the-Shore. In November 2011, new owners took over the property and extensive renovations have taken place. This historic waterfront hotel is now both luxurious and contemporary and is known as Kaikoura Boutique Hotel.
