“Like the hostel as the end of the world”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2011

Greymouth is a depressing enough place without staying here. My advice, don't go to Greymouth. If you DO have to go go there, treat yourself to somewhere decent!

This place was formerly an old pub/hotel and feels like it has been preserved in time, ghosts and all! Old dark corridors, Victorian mental institution bathrooms, strange people lurking around, damp and draughty, the common room used to be the old bar and feels oppressive. The kitchen is dreadful, one of the worst I have seen in any hostel. Far too small, always dirty and not nearly enough equipment for a hostel of its size.

The staff were lazy, uninterested and sometimes rude. On two occasions when I went to reception the boy there stopped me mid enquiry to do something else. The owner Steve seemed ok in our dealing with him, but come on Steve, sort this place out!

Are there any goods points? Well, the double room we had was not too bad, with a little sink and TV that did not work. There is also free wi-fi.

We felt depressed after our time there!

“Tatty and tacky!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2010

Tatty and tacky! Old carpet troughout (with the accompanying smell), crammed bedrooms (u so wish they had invested in bunks, at least u could move in the room), tiny bathrooms (u cant shut the door without twisting urself), cracking paint everywhere and last but not least a tacky “’nautical theme” with everything from duvet covers to shower curtains with fishes and mermaids (i felt like an 8 yo girl).

“Sadly shabby”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2010

Much is made of the fact that Neptunes doesn't have bunk beds - and that would be a major point in its favour if the beds it does have weren't so old and saggy that they're impossible to sleep on.

Everything about this hostel is screaming for it to be redecorated - Lonely Planet talks about its "nautical theme" but the painted mermaids are faded and the carpets, walls and, well, everything is just shabby.

Location is ok, but from the centre of town it's quite an intimidating walk back down deserted streets after dark.

“Old, filthy and run down. In need of good renovation.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2010

Building is old and run down. Stuff coming off the walls. Pieces of carpets missing. Same for forniture. Filthy. Maybe Steve (or "the lazy bast..." as he introduced himself), the owner, should consider renovating the place. Not recommended, considering that it is not even cheaper than any other hostel.

“Must stay hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2009

Neptunes was a wonderful place to stay - they have small rooms, no bunks, and more importantly BATHS, I was so happy to see a bath after months of traveling.

The staff were lovely, the kitchen small but perfectly formed. Highly recommend.
