Have just spent four nights at this wonderful little place of peace and quiet. Located some 5 minutes drive out of the township of Margaret River, it is a perfect spot to recoup and use as a base to explore the area between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin in the south-west part of Western Australia. The area is physically beautiful with dense forests and scenic coastline dotted with vineyards and small boutique restaurants. ‘The Gilgara Retreat’ comprises a Main House which functions like a bed and breakfast, plus a number of self contained duplex villas each of which has its own little verandah on the bush where the birds, kangaroos and other wildlife can be seen and heard. A wonderful outlook. You can stock up with foodstuffs from the town and self cater as the units have their own kitchenette, good for breakfast, and then go to the town each evening for dinner in one of the many local restaurants. Sitting outside on the unit’s verandah listening to the frogs, birdcalls and other nightlife – a great sedative, rounded off the nights.
The units themselves are of interesting modern design with lots of glass windows aimed at optimizing the views and light. The main bedroom area in fact has no blinds but opens on to a secluded bush courtyard. We thought this may have let in morning light and make it hard to sleep (for those people Gilgara provides eyeshades) but in fact it is lovely to awaken to the gentle morning light and just lay in bed listening to the wildlife. It is akin to 5-star camping. The bathrooms are huge with excellent shower and spa facilities.

Elaine and Steve, our hosts, were wonderfully welcoming and gave great hints as to what is happening in the area and which sites and vineyards to visit. The drive to either end of the area takes only around 30-40 minutes and you can enjoy the parks and lighthouses at both Capes, and if you are lucky (like we were) see a whale or two, seals, and hordes of other local wildlife. The famous natural limestone caves are only 15 minutes away. We enjoyed 4 nights which gave us 3 full days to explore the area – just enough, another day would have made it perfect. ‘Gilgara’ was a wonderful break and we feel totally refreshed.

We really enjoyed our stay at Gilgara in the Margaret River. It is in a quiet location but very close to the main attractions of the area. We stayed in a garden suite which was lovely, including the spa bath. It was great to be able to see the moon from the bath! The only downside was that there were no blinds in the bedroom so light comes in early in the morning. This allows the suite to have an inside/outside feel but we would have preferred to sleep later. Elaine was a great host and made you feel very welcome which made up for the fact that Steven is quite taciturn. The breakfasts were simple and delicious. It is easy to reach Margaret River town and in fact possible to access everything from Gilgara. A great place to retreat to.

Room tip: The garden suite is well worth it.

These are very lovely modern cottages, self contained, have 2 cooking rings, fridge, microwave, selection of wine glasses to sample your bounty. Very clean, lovely location in a pal like setting. Private and relaxing. We liked the spa bath very much! The wine region spreads all around, this is a great location off caves road, 10 min drive to town. Nothing bad to say about it. Great for couples, not so good for little toddlers as a few stone steps between levels.

We stayed at Gilgara in July 2012 and it is just beautiful. The manager Elaine is super friendly and approachable, makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. We stayed in one of the Garden Suites and I couldn't fault it. Beautiful decor and loved the split level. The bathroom is huge with a big spa bath, the bed is located in the center of the room which adds a really lovely feel. The outdoor area is pleasant overlooking the gardens. Loved this place and would definitiley go back, well priced compared to other places in the area of the same standard.

Pros:
beautiful and peaceful
nice smell of bush
very nice rooms
we saw some Kangaroos in the lawn in the evening
Cons :
No curtains in the room , need eyes cover to sleep (provided)
We did not feel the genuine nice hospitality that is so common in this region from the hosts , the atmosphere was a bit stressed. But we might just have gotten them in a bad couple of days unfortunately, as other reviews are normally very positive about the hosts.

Room tip: Rooms outside themain house were great!
