With so many companies doing tours of Margaret River now, I was really unsure of which company to go with. I'm actually really glad the first couple of companies I tried were fully booked because the day could not have worked out any better!
We had a group of seven people looking to do a private tour. Adam, the owner of Margaret River Tours, patiently answered all my emails in the month preceeding the tour as we worked on itinerary. He had some great suggestions and our favourite wineries - Woodlands and Gralyns - were his recommendation. Once our itinerary was set, Adam rang each of the wineries in advance to make sure they were ready for us. Adam was even accommodating when I rang a week in advance to change the date! Despite being flat out he cancelled all our bookings and rescheduled them for the next day.
We picked one of the hottest days on record in Margaret River to do our tour and Adam was happy to let us on the (air conditioned) bus with a pretty big esky full of waters (and a few beers...). When he worked out that we weren't wine conossieurs he tailored his commentary to give us a bit of info about the margaret river wine region and whenever there was a lull in our sometimes quite enthusiastic conversation, Adam delighted us with some stories of the locals and living in Margaret River.
Lunch at the Bootleg Brewery was great. Adam had printed off the menu in advance for us so we could decide what we wanted and order as soon as we arrived (because it can get quite busy). And because we finished up a bit early at our last winery, Adam even detoured past the Margaret River cheese factory for us so we could stock up on supplies for when we got home.
All in all a great day. When we got home the seven of us agreed we could have easily ended up with a grumpy tour guide who wouldn't let a few drinks on the bus, who didn't bother to swing past the cheese shop, and who didn't have any good stories to tell us. But we didn't! My boyfriend and I have even decided to give the group tour a go next time we are down there. Thanks Adam!
