“Location is it's best asset”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Situated on a major city intersection, the hotel is in a great spot for watching the world pass by. Our queen sized balcony room was OK, if a little small. Smokers next door made the balcony less attractive than it may have been. The bed was comfortable but the towels were a little thin. In a city where the accommodation is expensive, this is a reasonable option.

“Well past its prime, reluctantly managed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

A typically overpriced establishment in Kalgoorlie. There is a fine line between romantic faded glory and plain downright shabby.

Booked the Hoover Apartment on-line but it wasn't available so was booked into a suite 'of equivalent' standard.

It turned out to be a converted shop on the ground floor on the streetfront, replete with blacked out shop windows and a door which had been kicked in and had not been repaired.

Facilities in the room were very basic, with a uncongruously large wide screen TV. The old chesterfield was shabby and unsupporrtive and very worn and tatty (no, it was NOT pleasantly lived in). Very poky bathroom which had been shoehorned into whatever space was available. Gloomy room with a most unappealing unnerving vibe. Bed was saggy and uncomfortable.

Service was grumpy and unfriendly.

Not recommended unless you have a thing for old quirky places which make Fawlty Towers seem like a 6 star luxury estabishment.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere.

“Disgusting hotel for disgusting price!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

I was charged $75 for a single bed which tilted to oneside as when you went to lay down you had watch you didnt knock yourself out on the shelf....The room was covered in dust (i have taken photos). The door didnt lock properly, the floorboards need changing, the sink had rusty taps. There was no remote contol for the TV.The TV reception was terrible and for that price you would expect Foxtel.Oh and the staff are rude.Would not stay there again, wasnt even fit for a dog!!!!!!

Room Tip: Just dont go there, choose another hotel...

“Chosen on Price - No Surprises”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

Basic country pub in a notoriously expensive mining town.
$95 night double with small ensuite.
Wifi didn't work.
Tired old linen not changed in four days.
Noisy until bar shut.
Central location with groceries and cheaper eats close.
Restaraunt well out of our price range!!!

“Loved it! Surprisingly good, but make sure you get a "good" room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2011

After an underwhelming experience at The View on Hannans the previous night, we booked into The Palace. I asked if the Hoover Apartment (which I'd seen online had room for the 3 of us) was available. It was, and the housemaid who was at reception willingly went upstairs to make up the sofabed for us, despite the fact she'd been going off shift when we arrived.

The apartment is in the "loft" of the hotel which entails a trek up the grand staircase (and it IS still grand), along a long corridor and up a small set of stairs to our suite. There are two other rooms on this level. The apartment consists of a very big bedroom with queen bed, with ensuite shower and toilet. There is a small corridor to an equally large lounge room with a wall mounted flat screen TV, table and chairs and sofas, including a sofa bed which was very comfortable. There is a kitchenette in a small room off the lounge, with all you could need including a microwave.

The apartment is newly painted in heritage colours, has chandeliers, clean and tasteful bedding and real character! Its windows look out onto the centre of Kalgoorlie.

The hotel's restaurant is on the balcony overlooking the street and was well heated. We didn't eat a full meal there but drinks and very nice desserts and coffees were served by attentive staff.

There is also a dining area on the ground floor which does wonderful lunches and breakfasts and is very good value, and the rooms are so historic and beautiful.

Did I mention the history of this place? Check out http://www.palacehotel.com.au/history.html for the details - absolutely fascinating story of the goldrush days and Herbert Hoover's (31st US President) connection with The Palace.

How much? Just $160 a night for an apartment for three of us. Love it...we'll be back!

A footnote...we saw some of the basic single rooms and they look a bit grim, but hey, at $55 a night what do you expect?

Room Tip: Ask for the Hoover Apartment
