“We got married here and what a DREAM location! Highly recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

My husband and I got married at the stunning Stoneridge Chapel on the Lake followed by a reception in the venue also at Stoneridge in March 2010. A friend of mine had got married there and that's how I found out about it. I had to organise this wedding from the USA and only arrived in NZ two weeks before the wedding and Suzanne made this an absolute breeze.

Communicating with Suzanne by email, nothing was too much trouble. Suzanne was always happy to answer all my questions and clarifications patiently and pleasantly. I was impressed with their willingness to do things a little differently to suit us etc. The gardens at that time of year were fantastic - I wanted roses blooming (partly why I chose that time of year) and I had roses and they were gorgeous - meaning you hardly need decorations surrounded by such beauty.

The chapel is just gorgeous, as are the grounds there, all very meticulously kept and the gardens are just fabulous. There are a multitude of photograph opportunities there on the grounds alone.

The food served up at the reception by the Stoneridge chef was absolutely divine! My husband and I both easily say that that was the best food we have ever had in our lives! I just wish I could have fit more in on the night but with the whole excitement I didn't have my normal appetite which was devastating to not be able to fit more of that food in! It was so good and we had so many comments from others about it. We were also very impressed with the waiter service during the evening also - they treated us like royalty, all of them went above and beyond to make us all feel special and that's another thing many of our guests commented on also. It made everything just perfect.

I would absolutely recommend this venue to anyone - it is the most beautiful venue I think I have ever seen as to compliment the beauty of the buildings is the gardens and then to top it off all the mountainous views and spectacular views and reflections of Lake Hayes. It was my dream venue and I have the best photos ever! I'm surprised celebrities dont know of this place as this is that kind of calibre.

“Pure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We were recently married at Stoneridge Estate in Queenstown. Suzanne and Wayne were our hosts and made our wedding the most perfect dream event. We did not expect the jaw dropping beauty of this location. It would have to rate in the top 10 most beautiful wedding destinations. Suzanne planned the perfect wedding for me with minimal imput from me and it was everything and so much more than I could have ever hoped to be. The venue is so beautiful set in their private vineyard, the staff so friendly and helpful and the food was simply to die for. We had guests looking for doggy bags to take food home it was that good. Suzanne carefully organised every detail including our photos which I have been told many times are the most beautiful wedding photos people have ever seen. This is because the backdrop is so beautiful it does not look real. But it is.

If I had all the money in the world and was looking for a place to go this is the place that I would pick. You will not be dissappointed. Put your trust in these lovely people and it will leave you in awe. I can't wait to go back. This is definately a hidden gem!

“Simply Superb! Unsurpassed setting, amazing architecture, Perfect Hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2010

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Stoneridge this month and we were extremely impressed. The Owners managed to combine the right level of attentiveness and professionalism which made us feel very welcome. The property itself is incredible, overlooking Lake Hayes and full to the brim with original and inspired features. If I wasn't already married, I would definitely choose to have my Wedding here :) We will definitely be back! Thank You for a wonderful stay!

“Massively Disappointing; Poor Value for Money, Poor Quality - Don't Trust Them to Provide you with your Dream Day”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2010

We initially planned to marry at Stoneridge Lodge and are so relieved that we didn't. Instead we spent $4720 on what was supposed to be a private blessing as part of our honeymoon. We wanted to have a really special day together which we would remember as a romantic event. Apart from the celebrant, the whole experience was totally disappointing and has left us feeling upset and ripped off.

The contract states that the site is 'exclusive use' but we had 2 couples come onto it while we were being videod after the ceremony and disrupt it, let onto the site by the gallery owner who lives next to the Chapel. The site owner said that this is a known problem as it isn't secure from access to the road and there is access from the gallery. The site looks interesting from the road so the public come and look round at their convenience.

We arranged a 'bespoke wedding package' but the owner has denied responsibility for the services he hired in for the day. The owner hired us a videographer whose english was poor and who we found out afterwards, had not videod a ceremony on her own before and usually followed a photographer around. We found the filming disorganised and unprofessional and the final DVD sent to us had 2 mistakes in it showing the videographer's lack of understanding of English dialogue and unclear direction on the day. We also paid for postage and packing but the DVD was sent in an envelope and was damaged in transit.

The ceremony timing was very rushed and stressful due to the itinerary arranged for us by the site owner not being long enough for us to have the blessing, do the filming and then catch a helicopter flight to the Remarkables. By the time we arrived for the helicopter flight, we felt really pressured and weren't enjoying the experience. We also paid $315 dollars for a trust the chef meal of which the main course was so salty, it was foul.

The honeymoon cottage was more gothic than romantic; there was a totally unromantic huge fitting of some sort over the bed which was really intimidating, a double duvet on a king size bed, the downstairs of the cottage is so dark that you don't want to spend any time there and there was a blocked drain smell in the shower - nice!

The website promises a dream location which we found to be very close to a main road and you could often hear gun shots of rabbits being shot and killed nearby, which didn't make for a romantic experience.

We raised the blessing issues with the site owner by phone on the drive to the helicopter flight and again with him and his wife as soon as we got back. He apologised and as we were staying in a cottage next to his house and he was serving us meals, we tried to put it to the back of our minds. When we left feeling disatisfied and considered the amount paid and poor experience we had, we emailed him and outlined our concerns again and asked for a refund for the areas that failed to meet the expected standard. We asked for 17% back of the total amount paid - we had to pay in full before the blessing took place.

He has refused to provide a refund, accused us of not raising the concerns early enough (which is ridiculous when we were totally rushed by the itinerary that we trusted to be arranged well for us), gathered statements from his staff rejecting that things didn't go well and now wants us to take him to court at a Disputes Tribunal. He said he will double the amount if we win which has made us highly suspicious of him. We feel very frustrated by this as we feel our money is being held on to, when the service delivered wasn't of an acceptable standard.

This experience was supposed to be a day to remember and now it is for all the wrong reasons. They sell a 'dream experience' on their web site but the reality is nothing like it. I wouldn't trust them with a dream day and I wouldn't stay here again or advise anyone else to.

Stoneridge, Manager at Stoneridge Lodge, responded to this review
27 May 2010
This couple left very complimentary of their stay and settled their account on departure. They confirmed in an email following their visit that they have taken away some very positive experiences, both in terms of how hospitable and helpful our staff were and the beautiful setting.
Almost 10 days after their departure they wrote to say they wanted $70.00 back on their meal, $325.12 refund on the chapel and $490.00 refund on the video package they had chosen. (Total 46% of the services)
Of most surprise to Stoneridge, was how exaggerated their issues had become on trip advisor since they did not receive what they wanted in terms if an expectant refund, compared to the email they sent which I am prevented from publishing on Trip Advisor.
A summary of my response at the time (10 days after they left) can be summarised as follows.
1. In the Chapel venue contract that was signed (and which is on our website) , it states that “if it is felt that any issue arises from the inadequate performance or provisioning of any service this must be reported to the duty manager and manager immediately”. When I spoke to the celebrant and videographer, neither was aware of the couples concerns in relation to another couple that had crossed the boundary into the Chapel grounds. If they had been they would have contacted one of my staff at the lodge and this could have been resolved immediately. As was pointed out by the couple when they were here, we do have signage advising the public that this is private land and entry should not be had unless by appointment.

2. I spoke with our staff member about the lamb rack and she maintains that she said that she had not seen the seasoning used on the rack of lamb and not that it was a new recipe. The menu (also on our website) shows a Canterbury Rack of Lamb, French Mustard and Malden sea salt rub …. As this is a Trust the Chef menu you chose, I guess there is a chance that not every dish will be totally suited to everyone subject to any special dietary preferences for which we seek confirmation prior. It is my understanding from staff member that served the couple, that the rack of Lamb was in fact consumed but the sea salt was scraped onto a side plate. In any event if this dish was unsuitable the chef was available to prepare another dish should they have wished or if this had been returned.

3. Upon speaking with the videographer she told me there is at least 40 minutes of unedited video. Having had a look at the package purchased it would appear that all aspects of the package have been covered, including the runsheet scheduling of videographer’s time post ceremony, if they were not happy with this it would have been advisable to have let me know prior to the wedding day. If they were unhappy with the DVD upon receiving it then I was happy to submit it to an independent review authority for comment as to its value, professionalism and whether its coverage reflects that of the package that you purchased. I think it is not fair to judge the value of this product until at least the couple had seen it.

In any event, in each of the issues, it is impossible to remedy any service deficiency whether actual or perceived, when it has been only raised in the timeframe such that is has.

The couple were happy to receive complimentary wine and beverage with their dinner as a gesture for the inconvenience of the couple walking on the grounds during videography.

If their concerns had been highlighted in terms of an expectant refund then this could have been dealt with more appropriately at the time. I don’t believe it is fair and certainly not legal to have services performed in good faith and then so long after, find some deficiency as grounds to a refund.

In any event, as a gesture and without prejudice, I offered $200.00 refund.

This offer was never accepted.

Alternatively Stoneridge offered to pay for arbitration of the matter, (done by teleconference), and would pay twice the award, if any. This was not acceptable either. I believe if the couple were sincere in their expectations of a refund, they would have accepted my offer above.

Turning to the other points on trip advisor.
The ceremony booked was a Wedding Blessing Ceremony with only the couple in attendance.
The couple were consulted as regards timings for the services booked for their ceremony. Furthermore they were provided a detailed itinerary outlining the time scheduling for their day for which they were asked to confirm and provide feedback on, should any changes be required. They confirmed everything met with their approval.
It was by the couples own admission, approximately 30 mins prior to their ceremony start time (2pm) that they had misunderstood/misread the videography package they had selected from the options sent to them. The packages (inclusions) were also detailed on the itinerary for which the couple confirmed. They thought they had the videographer for ten hours on their day, rather, the package states it includes ten hours editing (not coverage).
Here is the video package as the couple had purchased it.

RUNAWAY PACKAGE $980 inc. gst
Entire Ceremony
Signing of the Register
Guests Mingling and Congratulations
Candid style Camera after the Ceremony
10hrs Full Digital Editing
1 x DVD Authoring
DVD Sleeve and Label Design
The couple spent all morning preparing in the cottage for their ceremony including their own hair and make up and dressing preparations. The bride having declined flowers asked for ribbon to try and construct her own wedding bouquet from the flowers we had provided in the cottage tariff, only 10 minutes prior to her ceremony start. If they were running late or feeling rushed they only had to ask for a delay to the heli-flight. Stoneridge reject the claim that insufficient time was allowed; rather it was the client’s budget and their mis-interpretations, that provided the only constraints on their day..
The couple say they found salt excessive on 1 out of 5 courses, (but still chose to eat the meal), it is our policy, as in most fine dining establishments, to enquire as to guest satisfaction with their meal, particularly the main course. If the couple had been unhappy with the lamb and wanted a replacement dish then our chef would have been pleased to have provided an alternative. We are sorry the couple did not enjoy this particular course, but reject their claim that it was inappropriate to raise the issue being a private meal as apposed to one in a restaurant.
We were also sorry a couple transgressed through the estate to the gallery during videography. This had no final bearing on the couple’s ceremony which was in the chapel, or the final video, as the video was still to be edited. As is apparent from the correspondence, the couple were decidedly unhappy with the product even before it had been sent to them in the UK. The 11 acre estate comprises of 5 luxury rooms, it is I believe, reasonable to expect another couple in the garden and certainly we don’t advertise exclusivity of the entire venue unless all rooms are booked.
The two perceived mistakes in the video resulted in the videographer re-editing and sending a second copy. No thanks or credit was given by the couple for this when writing to trip advisor. The only criticism remaining was that of professionalism – which again comes as a surprise as they are one of the most reputed videographers in the region.
The couple believe they should receive a refund of $70 + $490 + 325.12 Total $885.12NZD
As can be found on our website, they were charged $650.00 (chapel), $315.00, (dinner for two) -5 courses, $980.00 videography package, Total $1945.00
They therefore seemingly want a 46% refund on these services, which frankly, I find unbelievable.
The remainder of the $4720 they paid was for accommodation, heli-flight and marriage celebrant.
The cottage does not have a double duvet (rather a king,) and has been assessed as a very high 5 star facility by Qualmark NZ.

No person on the Stoneridge property has a gun licence or either adjacent property – I am at odds to explain why this couple thought there were gun shots.

The owner did not serve this couple, and the cottage is no where near to where the owner resides on a completely separate property.

“Absolutely fabulous!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2010

We spent 2 nights at Stoneridge as well as getting married in their Chapel by the Lake. Everyone (Suzanne, Wayne, Pablo and Stephen) could not have been more helpful. We were fortunate in that when we stayed there were no other guests except ours and were made to feel that the main house was completely at our disposal. My new husband and I stayed in the cottage which was so romantic and the views from the bedroom were to die for. From the moment we arrived until we left we were made to feel welcome.

Stephen cooked a 5 course 'trust the chef' meal for the wedding breakfast and for two fussy eaters we were slightly concerned but again, it could not have been better.

Pablo was a great source of local knowledge and a really nice guy. A great credit to the Stoneridge Estate.

Cannot wait to go back for our anniversary!!!!
