“Not a pleasant night”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2009

During a recent New Zealand, we stoped in Dunedin for 3 days. Seeking accommodation, we visited the Dunedin Tourint Informtion centre (I-Site). They recomended the Woodlands Village motel and arranged a 3 night booking.

On arrival at the motel, the room we were given was old, dirty, moudy and outdated. It should not have been used for accommodating guests. The carpet was dirty, torn and mouldy. The bathroom was dirty and mouldy. We even had to change a light bulb to see in the bathroom. The motel reception people could really not have cared. During the night, a mouse even ran over the bed.

Maybe the motel does have clean renovated rooms, but we were not given one.

We left the next morning not at all happy, and to their credit, the I-site refunded our money and found alternate suitable accommodation.

“OK but not great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2008

We stayed here for 2 nights in January. I have mixed feelings about this place. It is both charming and run down and depressing. We had inspected a number of other motels in the area, all of which were newer, nicer and ultimately not much more expensive than this one. However, the selling point was of this one was that it offered two bedrooms and a living area. It also had a lovely garden with a climbing frame. We were shown a huge upstairs flat for $140 which was recently renovated but was very hot, directly on the very busy street and involved going up 2 flights of very ricketty stairs. The one we chose was not renovated but was on ground level and at the back of the building. The manager said that this one was $165 per night but $15 for each child. I was rendered speechless and my husband burst out laughing. She reduced the cost to $140. On the plus side it had a full ktichen and electric blankets. It has a huge airing cupboard and a washing machine and dryer. It is in walking distance of the excellent Otago museum. On the down side it is an old building removated somewhat oddly in the 1970s. It is dark and gloomy, especially at night. It had the lowest watt bulbs I have ever encountered. The bathroom is old - the shower has no soap holder and the toilet had a broken roll holder. The front bedroom had bunk beds that gave me some concern and a very old, soft single bed. It is also a very airless, stuffy room. The double back bedroom was bigger and brighter but it backed onto a shared student house so Saturday night was a bit noisy. It was also a very cold room and I think would be chilly in winter. There are apartments above and the inhabitants plus their draining water can be heard. The furniture was pretty old and the TV didn't work very well. No Sky TV. The garden in front of the units can get a little crowded and smokey. Security is not great either. I think that this complex is more about long term accommodation and it is pitched at students.

  • Liked — Sunny little garden
  • Disliked — Run down and not very clean look and feel of place
