“Perfect location, great place to stay !”

I chose Pacific Park Hotel for my recent 6 night stay for its proximity to Mercy Hospital where a family member was a patient.
My room was extremely spacious, comfortable and well appointed. It was well heated, and quiet and the daily continental breakfast included was enjoyed with the beautiful view from the restaurant. Management and staff were helpful and understanding of my situation.
I most certainly would stay again and will recommend it to others with pleasure.
Thank you Pacific Park :)

“Hospitality, ettiquette, and business knowledge needed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Firstly, I will start with the good points, as I like to acknowledge these. The room we stayed in was clean, modern, well stocked with necessary items, and overall a lovely room. They supplied a smoking area outside on the balcony, which is hard to find nowadays. The cleaning staff presented themselves at an appropriate time in the morning to service the room, and were most polite and efficient. The second positive during my stay of 2 days, was the young waitress who served both breakfast and dinner both days, who although not yet fully trained in the art of serving etc, was polite, helpful, attentive, and always strove to please. Unfortunately, this is where the positives finish! Whilst on the subject of food, lets start... my situation for staying was a business AGM with around 14 people from all over NZ, most over the age of 70. The food was paid for by the incorporation, and was presented to us at dinnertime as a fixed menu with a couple of choices for the main and dessert. Problem number one: the staff or chef or owner or whomever should have been responsible for setting this menu (and they have many choices within their menu structure) did NOT take into account the ages of the diners, and both nights, the majority of the meals were spicy, chilli filled items! Anyone with any brain, would know these are not meals fit for senior citizens. As a matter of fact, my husband and I only took one bite from the "Thai Fishcakes" which were the set entree on the second night, and could not possibly eat them as they were extremely hot, doing the usual chilli burn to the pallatte, so left them. We were not alone in this, around 2/3 of our party did not eat more than one bite. Upon coming to take our plates, the manager perused all the full plates and said loudly, laughing, " Couldn't handle them eh??" I couldn't believe it!! No apology, which to me would have been the least she could have done ie " Oh, I am sorry you didn't enjoy the entree". Personally, it would have taken 5 minutes for her to have said " Oh sorry you didn't enjoy the entree, could I get you the soup of the day?". You need to understand she made her comment laughingly as she took these plates. ( I am only assuming she was the manager, as she was an older woman, and seemed to have her finger in every pie in the place, although she should have introduced herself to us upon arrival) Also, vegetables should be served lightly cooked and the first night they were, but the second they were were raw but warm. The dessert was another instance of lack of servery knowledge, as I received my cheesecake slice, ball of icecream and cream, on a flat plate with only a spoon to consume it. When the 'manager' came nearby I asked her if I could have a dessert fork please, to which she laughed and said "Yeah???". She searched for one, brought it to me, and then of course, the other members of our group also requested one, sick of chasing their food round the plate! The servery person did not know these existed and acted like I was a fool asking for one. Funnily enough though, the dessert setting the next night, included a fork! OK, onto drinks! The bar there was where we bought ourselves a pre-dinner drink, and nearly fell off the perch! I had a single Kahlua and milk, my husband a small glass of red wine (not a specific one, just what they had opened-house wine) and our bill for that was $19 ! Crazy prices for the level of hotel. Lunch was worse. They did not even see fit to seat us in the dining room ( remember we were a group of 15 people, only 3 of which were under 65yrs! Most in their 70's, and one well into his 80's), but instead, plopped a few plates of mismatched food on top of the bar, and we sat about in some chairs in the vicinity, and ate on our laps! The food must have been leftover, as the dishes were strangely mismatched ie Singapore noodles hot dish, mini Quiches and deep fried food in a second serving plate! I don't know quite what they were thinking, but the food supplied was minimal, inappropriate, and most left still hungry. Morning and afternoon teas were to be supplied during the meetings on both days, and they were, but as usual the tea and coffee was tepid to cold, and the supply of biscuits/cakes etc was basic, and seemingly metered out one per person! You have to understand that this group of people paid a LOT of money to stay here! I, myself, did not attend the meetings, so found myself thinking about using the advertised wireless internet offered to all rooms. I rang the reception area, and asked if I could get the wireless internet please. The woman ( sorry, that manager again!) said yes, then was silent. I asked if she could supply me with the relevant details then to connect ( I asked for username password etc as you always need to connect). She said she could. Another pause and quietness. I then said ok, and again asked for the username and password . She said I would HAVE to come to the office to get them. I asked could she not just give them to me on the phone, to which she replied NO. I said well ok then I won't worry about it, and she replied OK, and hung up! Very rude, and I am disabled, so could not easily walk all the way from my upper storey room to the reception area. She knew who I was, as I was courteous enough to introduce myself at the beginning of the phonecall, so knew this would be difficult for me, and as she only has to read the necessary details to connect off a piece of paper, it would have been a good thing to have let me do this from my room. What I did do, was look at other possible wireless connections from my room, found another hotel close by that offered it, was able to get to their connection and connect online by purchasing the username etc, for cheaper than the hotel I was staying in I might add. So problem solved, but by another hotel, not the one I was in! Amongst small 'peeves' like no one ever answering the reception desk bell so you eventually gave up and left, all in all, I was very disappointed in this hotel. I have stayed in many hotels all over the world for both business and private reasons, and this rates as one of the worst for those above categories!

At Pacific Park we acknowledge we can always improve and encourage comments, suggestions and dialogue with our guests. I apologise we didn't get right this time, and I will certainly take on board the suggestions and criticism. We obviously didn't react quickly enough to our elderly guests' preferences with diets and food control. We pride ourselves in being a "happy place" - and I regret if our staff have given the wrong impression about service - which we do take very seriously.
We like to see our guests return, and if these guests choose to revisit Pacific Park, I will personally ensure we will really go all out to make up for the disappointment with their previous visit.

“Excellent corporate hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

I have known of Pacific Park for many years, but only very recently did I stay as a guest. The special touch of a fruit bowl in my room ( important in Dunedin in July ), and a very comfortable modern room, was very much appreciated. The reception people were polite, knowledgable and helpful. I plan to stay again on my next visit, and will encourage my colleagues to do so when in Dunedin, and enjoy the extensive facilities of Pacific Park.

“Best hotel we stayed at i Dunedin.”

We will certainly stay at Pacific Park on our next trip to Dunedin. The staff were courteous and friendly and our roon was modern, bright and comfortable. The best point was that there was no traffic noise as there often is in main street hotela and motels. Great Chef, and quality bedding and towels. We will stay there on our next visit to Dunedin.

Room Tip: First floor rooms offer both a view and privacy.
