Okay, I am a bit biased. We have been here for 4 years running. And each time we have a great stay. The units are spacious and well provided. The staff are friendly. And overall they provide reasonable value for money. If your holiday theme is wildlife viewing in a rural environment then the Otago Peninsula is ideal and these units are well situated. Our unit had a view of the Otago harbour and the Portobello bowling green. It had a sizeable bed, dining table, two chairs (not as comfortable as at home, but acceptable), patio doors to a veranda, and the usual well provided kitchenette and bathroom with good functioning shower.
The property was located away from roads and provided a peaceful environment. Wifi was available (on Zenbu) that worked well. The reception staff were helpful and cheerful. Providing advice on trips etc as required.
A great award winning fish and chip shop, a modest 3 minute walk away, provided fab blue cod in a delicious batter (and close by was a restaurant, and pub providing meals of fair quality). There is a mini-supermarket for all the basic requirements and a cafe.
Portobello is a great centre for wildlife viewing. Albatrosses at a mainland breeding colony at the peninsula cape (approx 20 klms away), hooker sea lions at a number of beaches, yellow eyed penguins freely visable at certain nearby beaches (and at pay for entry sites and tours, some of which are very good), blue penguins, fur seals, estuary bird life (stilts, kingfishers etc) as well as owls ... the list is endless. There is an aquarium (part of the Dunedin university) that is of interest. Dunedin is a circa 30 minute trip away.
The motel had just, during our visit, had a change of ownership - so it is very much hoped that the new owners will maintain and build upon the high standards in place at this establishment.
