“Central for peninsula wildlife”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Okay, I am a bit biased. We have been here for 4 years running. And each time we have a great stay. The units are spacious and well provided. The staff are friendly. And overall they provide reasonable value for money. If your holiday theme is wildlife viewing in a rural environment then the Otago Peninsula is ideal and these units are well situated. Our unit had a view of the Otago harbour and the Portobello bowling green. It had a sizeable bed, dining table, two chairs (not as comfortable as at home, but acceptable), patio doors to a veranda, and the usual well provided kitchenette and bathroom with good functioning shower.
The property was located away from roads and provided a peaceful environment. Wifi was available (on Zenbu) that worked well. The reception staff were helpful and cheerful. Providing advice on trips etc as required.
A great award winning fish and chip shop, a modest 3 minute walk away, provided fab blue cod in a delicious batter (and close by was a restaurant, and pub providing meals of fair quality). There is a mini-supermarket for all the basic requirements and a cafe.
Portobello is a great centre for wildlife viewing. Albatrosses at a mainland breeding colony at the peninsula cape (approx 20 klms away), hooker sea lions at a number of beaches, yellow eyed penguins freely visable at certain nearby beaches (and at pay for entry sites and tours, some of which are very good), blue penguins, fur seals, estuary bird life (stilts, kingfishers etc) as well as owls ... the list is endless. There is an aquarium (part of the Dunedin university) that is of interest. Dunedin is a circa 30 minute trip away.
The motel had just, during our visit, had a change of ownership - so it is very much hoped that the new owners will maintain and build upon the high standards in place at this establishment.

Room Tip: Go for one overlooking the view of the harbour

Thankyou for taking the time to write a review. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and hope very much that you will return yet again!
We know we have a hard act to follow as the previous owner was a great host but we will endeavour to follow in her footsteps.

“Clean, spacious and scenic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

My husband and I stayed in a 2 bedrom cottage for a week during February this year. We felt we had a 'home' rather than a holiday rental. The cabin was well appointed, immaculately clean and had comfy beds. Christine and her team provided excellent service. The location was fabulous and even though the trip was a business one, we had a much better experience than had we stayed in Dunedin.

Room Tip: Two bedroom cottage at back is quiet and private.

“Comfortable & great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

We arrived at the Portobello Motel earlier than we were supposed to, but were quickly accommodated and allowed to check-in early. The hostess kept apologizing that because we were early, she hadn't had a chance to turn on the heat and so the room would be cold. Obviously, there is a great desire to provide great service. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a well-appointed kitchen and bathroom. Portobello itself is tiny, so everything is just a short walk away. Great place to stay when in the Otago Peninsula.

“Great place to stay a definite must for a Dunedin holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

We arrived late on our first night to find our unit warm and our host friendly. Even on our day out doing the tourist thing - we arrived back to find heaters and lights on for us. Very clean, modern and provided all we needed including wireless internet for the facebook members of the family. Whilst a good 20 mins from Dunedin, Portobello offers a quiet stay close to other tourist locations. Didn't miss being in heart of Dunedin. Great cafes/restaurants close to hand. Really great place to stay. Definately would stay here again.

“A gem on the bay”

We lobbed into Portobello to chase up family tree information from a fourth cousin. Two motels in town and this one offered free wireless internet. Good choice also on the beach front.
Gerrald and Mary welcomed us for what turned out to be 5 nights; family history can be like that.
The unit we had was very spacious with a kitchenette and the motel had a laundry at reasonable prices.
We spent the week travelling about the peninsula where my Great Gandfather and his brother settled from Scotland in the 1860's. Interestingly the 2 brothers married 2 sisters who had arrived a few years beforehand. Means half the population was related directly or indirectly to us. Came away with many scanned documents and photos of relatives we had not previously had images of.
Great location
