*We visited pre-quake so the recommendations of places I am about to give may sadly be no longer valid.* Room 343 was small and the walls were paper thin (I could hear every small cough made by the people in the room next to us) but it suited our needs as a base for a couple of nights in lovely Christchurch. The location is fantastic, almost opposite the art centre and round the corner from the art gallery. Try the pub opposite, we really liked it, and the Art restaurant (opposite the art gallery) had an offer on, lunch and coffee $15, which is great value and had lovely food. We found the room itself very warm but the curtains are so thin upon sunrise the room gets a little too bright for my liking. It was right opposite the bathroom which was great except for the fact that the doors are weighted so if you don't close them gently they slam behind you, and some other residents don't seem to be very bothered about people who might be trying to sleep. Other than these small niggles the building itself is very nice and the staff are friendly and helpful. Wifi is available and the lounge is huge with a book exchange, tourist info, and a pool table and the large kitchen is well equipped. The tap water in Christchurch is nicer than much of the bottled stuff out there, so take my advice and don't waste your money buying water here!
