“A great hotel but a little tired.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2012

Having stayed at the Intercontinental lots of times in the past I knew to expect good service and we got it! We chose to stay on the club/executive floor (Floor 9 & 10 I think these are) as it works out to be more economical. The ladies in the club lounge are fantastic...really good service!
It was really only the rooms that disappoint and this maybe only on the club floors as I was under the impression that a lot of the other rooms have been renovated recently. But for a five star establishment and for the cost of the rooms I would of expected better. You can go down the road and get a nicer room for cheaper but you won't get the same level of cleanliness and service that you get at the Intercontinental. So once they have completed all renovations I would say it will still be one of the top places in Wellington to stay! The location is perfect as well - so close to everything!

Room Tip: Book an executive/club room if you have a car because by the time you pay for daily valet service (w...

“Perfectly okay - but not a 5* Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2012

Spent 3 nights here with spouse during the recent World Rugby Seven’s competition so I was half expecting it to be crowded and quite noisy – it wasn’t. If it was busy it was barely noticeable so the hotel coped admirably with what must be one of Wellington’s busiest weekends of the year. Its ideally located close to the main shopping street and across the road from Queen’s Wharf where most of Wellington seemed to have congregated to have fun. All the staff without exception were courteous, welcoming and helpful. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant once and were impressed with the quality of the food – the hotel even achieving that increasingly rare event of serving food on a very hot plate. The optional breakfast at NZ$32 is good value with plenty of choice to suit most tastes. So it’s all good – except for the room! My first impression was it’s reasonably spacious and had everything we needed until I realised there is only a queen size bed in the room and even then the wardrobe door did not open fully due to lack of space. The bathroom was okay, just – but in my view a hotel with a 5* rating should not expect its guests to make do with a shower over the bath which inevitably means water all over the floor. The desk with wifi connection will be welcomed by business travellers but perhaps it’s at the expense of a king size bed (which I expect in a 5* hotel) in the belief that they are sole occupants. I’m not! At least the room was very quiet.

“Excellent service and rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2012

Really enjoyed my stay here and just worlds apart from where I stayed the next night the James Cook which was a HUGE let down. Staff was supremely helpful and courteous in every way. Beds and pillows were super comfy, and hotel had great food. Would definitely stay here again, everyone from concierge to bar staff to check in ladies offered impeccable service!

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

This hotel really isn't up to Intercon standards. The staff are very obliging and helpful but it doesn’t make up for the fact that at least some of the rooms are in serious need of attention. The hotel has had some investment but a coat of paint doesn’t disguise that bathrooms are well past their sell-by date. And the beds seem to be of variable quality. At this level of hotel and for this kind of money, I expect rooms to be of a higher standard, and for the standard to be consistent.

Check-in and check-out didn't go smoothly. There was a problem finding my reservation when I arrived, and my bill was incorrect when I left.

There is decent restaurant with good quality food. This was good enough to tempt me and two colleagues to have dinner on two occasions. Although the food was excellent both times, one person got the wrong dish on each occasion. Of course, we could have sent it back, but that simply isn’t practical when dining with others - especially as the food took a long time to arrive in the first place

I had a couple of issues with how clean the room was. The shower door didn’t look clean towards the bottom, and one of the cups in my room was dirty.

Turndown service is minimal. The bed didn’t get turned down and the towels weren't replenished.

A nice touch is that the hotel will deliver complimentary tea/coffee if you book a wake-up call. And it arrives within a few minutes of the wake-up call.

There is a nice club lounge with helpful staff. Evening cocktails are from 1730 to 1900, which feels a little early and 30 min shorter than any other hotel I've stayed in. There is a reasonable range of snacks.

Breakfast is nice, with a reasonable buffet and a nice al-a-carte menu.

Location is good, with some rooms overlooking the water.

Internet was very slow.

Disturbingly, I had two security related incidents:

1) A colleague who arrived after me was erroneously checked into, and given a key for, the room that I was already occupying. Luckily it was my colleague but if the hotel's system lets them allocate the same room to more than one guest, I could have been faced with a complete stranger walking into my room.

2) Commercially sensitive documents that were clearly marked with a name and room number, were delivered to the wrong room. Again, it was a another colleague's room, but I worry that they could have ended up anywhere.

All in all, it feels like the hotel needs some investment in both the rooms and its systems to bring it up to the standards of other Intercon hotels I've stayed in.

Room Tip: If you stay on a Friday, you might want to avoid the side of the hotel with a bar that plays loud mu...

“Great service and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I purchased a mystery deal and was suprised to see it was for the Intercontinental...
I spent one night recently and found the service level to be of a very high standard. Everyone from the concierge to the bar staff to the spa staff were extremely friendly and approachable - in fact I did not have to even approach - the initiative shown by everyone blew me away!
The building itself I understand is due to undergo renovations soon. This will take the Intercon to the next level.
I had a room on Level 2 overlooking the main road and found the room very quiet and free from traffic noise. The windows open slightly which was nice for some fresh air
The swimming pool and spa on level 3 is nice, obviously a bit dated but it was kept clean and tidy and was not very busy anyway.
The room amenities are very well thought out - from a travel sewing kit to emery board to an international power adaptor...
The radio and TV in the room were very handy as was the alarm clock.
For the value I paid (on a mystery deal under 200) I thought it was a good value, nice easy stay, thank you
