I've always wanted to stay at the Museum Hotel on my visits to Wellington, as I had read a lot about the art. Overall the experience was good - the large range of art through out the ground floor area and on some of the other levels was certainly worth looking at. It is a nice mix of New Zealand art, predominantly large modern, representational works and clearly reflect the owner's taste. Good art definitely adds to the character of a hotel.
The location is very central and handy to everything in downtown Wellington. We had a harbour room which had a small balcony and a view of the waterfront and Te Papa. My only negative is that our room was a little bit small and we could hear the neighbours quite clearly - the sound proofing wasnt great. Thankfully it was a quiet night. The panel for the lift on our floor had been damaged and also one of the artworks on the 2nd floor had been broken which just lowered the high quality feeling of the place. We had a drink at the bar which had a lovely atmosphere (my cocktail at $17 tasted great but the glass was so full of crushed ice that I felt a bit ripped off) - but we walked downtown to eat.
A lovely experience but I am not sure I will be bothered to go back and stay again, at the price. I find it hard to go past the Quality Hotel with it's cheaper price and larger rooms.
