“Didn't meet expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2012

Found this hotel to be ok but nothing special.
The rooms I thought were very dated. The view from the room well not really a view, all i could see was the roof of another building and a generator which kept me up most of the night with the noise.
The staff were sometimes helpful but there was a girl that was quite rude but she may have been having a bad day we all have those!
The general entrance to the hotel was a little strange you either entered by the car park or through a small shopping centre area. the lifts were a little confusing also.
All in all for the price of the room it did not meet expectations, if it was a little cheaper I would stay again but if the price stays the way it is I would find alternative accommodation.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor (20+) for better view and away from generators on roof

Thank you for your review, I am sorry that your stay with us fell short of your expectations. I am also very disappointed to hear that your interactions with our staff were not consistent – we place great emphasis on delivering friendly and efficient service, please accept my apologies for this shortfall.

The hotel has two main entry points. From The Terrace many people do choose to walk into the hotel via the car park, however there is direct pedestrian access from the footpath to the foyer. Alternatively you can enter via the elevators in the James Cook Arcade on Lambton Quay.
I hope we will have an opportunity to welcome you back soon.

“Definitely would not stay here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2012

After spending a night at the Intercontinental I was very saddened by my experience at the JC. The place was swarmed with tour groups so waiting for check in took for ever, no one to help with bags and when I asked if an airport shuttle could be booked for me I was told to come back. Front desk staff kept directing me to the wrong places when I asked for directions and considering I had a sprained ankle from a run I took yesterday that meant a lot of painful uncessary hobbling (also, the fact that I was injured and no one offered to help with my bags kinda sucked and that there was no one to help with my bags or anyone elses!!) . Also it's not like I was checking in super early it was lat like 4:30 pm! Inside of the hotel is shabby and worn, pillows pretty uncomfortable. Definitely not worth the price tag. Location is good though.

I am very sorry that you did not have a good experience with us. We do attempt to have plenty of staff available to assist our guests with their luggage and provide a warm welcome to the hotel. Unfortunately from time to time we do get caught out as planned arrival times may change, however this is certainly not the level of service our teams strive hard to achieve. I hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future and you can enjoy our normal warm efficient hospitality.

“The use of reception as a walkway between Lambton and the Terrace detracts from the Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2012

My partner and I stayed at James Cook after a lovely new years holiday in the Hawkes Bay. We have stayed here previously (back in 2010) and although the rooms are lovely and we enjoyed our stays overall, we found the use of a hotel as a walkway from Lambton Quay to the Terrace a really large turn off. No matter what time of day there are always crowds of people walking through the hotel for the use of the elevator. After spending the afternoon shopping the last thing I wanted to do was get in to the elevator back up to the hotel and be squashed in with around eight other people who weren't staying in the Hotel but simply trying to avoid walking up the stairs/hill to the terrace. Not good.

Thanks for taking the time to write your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the room – and I hope your shopping was successful. The elevators from Lambton Quay can at certain times of the day get busy as we are located right in the heart of the prime shopping and business district. Many of our guests choose to sit in our lobby bar or foyer over a coffee or glass of wine and enjoy people watching as commuters traverse between The Terrace and Lambton Quay – this foot traffic does provide a certain vibrancy and atmosphere in our lobby.

“Brilliant Spa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2012

Nice and central hotel on The Terrace with easy access to Lambton Quay for shopping in Wellington. Cafe and restaurants serves good meals also with lively "happy hours". The pianist is always entertaining and lively! Nothing beats the spa though. They are very good! I last stayed was in 2010, but will look forward to another stay here.

Room Tip: Book a Lambton room and above for comfort.

“City Suite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

person found this review helpful

We stayed in the City Suite for 3 nights over New Years - lovely large apartment style room, with HUGE bed and fantastic views over the city (24th floor). Service from all staff was great, all were attentive to our needs.
Buffet breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant was great, although there was a special on that if you finished dinner by 7pm you'd get the meal cheaper - not something that was advertised (that we saw). Food made up for it though - hubby is a truck driver so he was in his element!
Little disappointed in the welcome fruit (2 apples) and special treat which we assume was a small package of pinapple lumps - but it is the thought that counts!
Note: the coffee tables around the property and (in the room) with glass tops have extremely sharp corners, one month on I still bear the scar on my knee from walking into it - so be careful!
