The Kooljaman resort is at the end of the earth, or at least it feels that way after the two and a half hour drive from Broome across bone shaking, teeth rattling dry sandy dirt tracks.. but that's what I wanted to do....wasn't it?
The safari tent in which we stayed was adequately sized for a couple, as well as the main bed, two singles were within the same tented enclosure. On the same platform but outside of the tent was the kitchen and bathroom consisting of a sink, fridge, utensil cupboard and in a side room shower and toilet and wash basin.
We had great views from the tent and easy access to the beaches, restaurant and shop. A reminder, you're in the bush so any food crumbs etc. will be covered with ants at the first opportunity, so tidy up. On the plus side, several tree frogs will turn up at night in the kitchen area to eat the ants, so these may need gentle persuasion to move out of the way before you wash up or put the kettle on.
All the Safari tents are adequately spaced and angled as such that you can't directly overlook another tent. There's a quiet time after 9pm, but we found there was no human sounds beyond 7pm. I can't comment what it was like at the camp ground. I suppose if you can't sleep to the noise of the surf crashing on shore or the sound of cicada beetles, then bring earplugs or this isn't the place for you.
I didn't get mobile phone reception here at any point, but there were several people in the restaurant area, talking on a mobile phone loudly, but hey, I'm just a tourist and get the roaming operator my service provider teams up with.
There is a wireless hotspot at reception and 30 minute or one hour slots can be purchased from the shop, although a bit expensive. In the city, you'd get 24 hours for the same price as one hour here.
The beaches, both east and west are gorgeous, very long and there's enough space to claim as your own for the day. I did manage to see a glimpse of a whale blowing and then the arch of it's back as it went under, but was accused of imagining it.
The restaurant had good quality food, with complements to chef for the evening meal. The meal on the second night was delivered to the tent so that we could cook it on the BBQ located on the deck.
Overall, a very enjoyable and relaxing stay. Two nights just doesn't seem long enough, so next time it will have to be longer.
