I stayed here for two weeks while attending the Australian Open tennis tournament. In the past I've stayed at the business oriented chain hotels (Marriott, Park Hyatt) but didn't like having to eat out for every meal. After a recommendation from friends that had stayed at the Oaks-on-Lonsdale, I chose a 1 bedroom suite for this trip and was very happy I did.
For about the same price as the Marriott, I was able to stay in a small apartment style hotel room with a separate bedroom, kitchenette and small dining area. The rooms are basic, not upscale, but everything was functional and clean. The location in the Central Business District (CBD) is very nice and only a 15-20 minute walk to the tennis at Melbourne Park.
Having the kitchenette with a refrigerator made the extended stay much nicer as I was able to eat in the room and only go out for meals when I wanted to experience a specific restaurant. There is a small grocery store next door to the hotel for the basics and the occasional tram trip to the Queen Victoria Market for specialty cheeses, meats and produce means one can eat well at a significantly lower cost than having to go to restaurants for everything.
The location in the CBD makes it convenient for access to the things in Melbourne I enjoy: Chinatown, restaurants, tram lines, attractions, etc. and the overall cost is less than staying in the chain hotels.
The only downside was the coffee supplied in the room is instant and he closest good coffee shop was a couple of blocks away.
