“Breakfast is a plus.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We booked with Hotel Sophia based on the reviews in Tripadvisor. We were in Melbourne for the Australian Open.

The rooms are clean but small, just enough to space to sleep & store your luggages. Bathtoom is very small.

Hotel is in walking distance to Kings Cross station. City Tram- which we found very useful is just on the street corner. There are cafes close- little Lonsdale, but thats pretty much it.

My recommendation is to stay close to Elizabeth St. or Bourke St if you want to be close to everything- food, shopping, train station, etc.

Do not expect a modern accomodation. But breakfast is really a plus.

“Comfortable, cosy, modern room in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I stayed here for 2 nights and would have no hesitation in staying again. Situated only a couple of streets from the CBD and major train station (Southern Cross) the room was .. cosy. It wasnt huge however it had everything you would want for a short trip to melbourne such as desk, bathroom, storage space etc.. The price also included free breakfast which was ok as well, all the usual breakfast things you would expect such as cereal, toast and some hot stuff.

The hotel was in the process of expanding when i was staying and i think that my floor had all refurbished rooms so i would think/hope that all other rooms were going through the same thing.

The foyer decor does not do this hotel justice. The out dated foyer decor is a complete opposite to the actual rooms themselves which are modern and cute!

Overall, a comfotable, affordable and convenient stay and i would recomend it without hesitation especially since they are expanding

Room Tip: ask to inspect before you pay and dont let a hotel foyer distract you from a place!

“I thought there would be a catch but there wasn't any..!”

The hotel is located near the station, has excellent (and very clean!!) rooms. The breakfast buffet is varied and service of staff is good; definitely would stay here again!

“24 hour reception, free breake and comfy bed.”

My daughter and I stayed here for 2 nights. It was fairly quiet. beds were comfy and a welcoming chocolate was on the end of the bed. I found reception friendly and the owner very nice. very handy having the pub next door and accessing it from Hotel Sophia without having to go on the footpath. The breake was great. plenty of hot food and lovely coffee and tea. Our room was the smallest and had no view and she told us that on arrival but we didn't mind because we were sightseeing anyway. Perhaps a shelf in the bathroom and a couple of hooks for towels would be good.
The price was good as we were right in the CBD and very close to Southern Cross Station. so not far to walk with our suitcases. It was nice to be greeted by reception when we arrived back after midnight after our full day tour. I would recommend this hotel.

“"Good location"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I was quite disappointed with this hotel. When we walked into reception the man walked away from us. After waiting a few minutes someone finally checked us in. Our room was clean but during the night, I could hear the people talking in the next room and in the early morning, I was woken by loud building works outside. The breakfast buffet was poorly serviced. There were about 8 other people in the restaurant and there were no staff about and no cutlery with minimal quantities of food. I had to go to reception and ring the bell and when the girl came out, I told her and to her credit, she quickly attended to the cutlery and food. Parking was terrible as the parking station we were told to use was closed when we returned to the hotel after midnight. Luckily we found parking on the road a few minutes walk away. The location of the hotel was great as it's only a short distance to the CBD. I would only stay there again if I couldn't find anything else. We decided to stay in Melbourne one more night so I rang the hotel to make a reservation and the male was quite rude and refused to match the price of the previous evening and wanted to charge a further $20 - not worth it! I found a better hotel nearby!
