We stayed at the Langham for two nights, our second visit in as many months. The rooms are lovely and the staff very helpful - sometimes a little too helpful - a simple "is there anything more I can do" would suffice but they tend to linger which can be a tad irritating when you're tired and you just want them to leave.
The buffet breakfast is fantastic but we did have one issue with the service on our first visit. We asked to sit at a table by the window, as there were several which were empty, but were politely told "no" and were sat at a table for two in the middle of the dining area. We were pretty annoyed, especially as people who came after us were then guided to the empty window seats. We worked out that the tables by the window were set for four people. Any empty tables for two were filled before parties of only two people were "allowed" to sit at the empty tables (set for four) by the window.
Whilst breakfast at the hotel is lovely, Melbourne is very cosmopolitan and has many great little cafes; we much prefer to eat at one of those. Degraves Street, a small laneway which runs off Flinders Lane, is full of them and an easy walk across the river.
The Concierge was very helpful finding a restaurant at short notice and we were not disappointed. One tip we learned: if there is a particular Melbourne restaurant you want to visit, book well ahead, as the good Melbourne restaurants book up very quickly, When booking at short notice, always go through the Concierge. Restaurants reserve seats for Concierge bookings and when you are told that a restaurant is full, that isn't necessarily the case.
Room Service food is good but the coffee is usually lukewarm by the time it arrives so don't wait too long to drink it.
All in all, this is a lovely hotel in a fantastic location.
Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger so offer more space. Always select a room with a view of the river.
