“Great location. Nice and helpful front desk staff.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We had room 406. The room was adequate. The facilities were functional. Cleanliness was below average. The lounge is quite stained and the linen looked like it had not been changed upon last check out on the "king" bed (2 singles pushed together). There was blood on the bottom sheet which I discovered at bed time first night. The front desk once alerted to the issue were very helpful at notifying housekeeping who came and changed it straight away. Housekeeping were a little slow on doing the rooms, it was after 4pm two days out of our 7 day stay before the room was attended too and the housekeeping had to be reminded on one of those. Housekeeping was not provided on Sunday's or public holidays but the front desk were happy to assist with any queries regarding linen and new towels. Rocele on the front desk was particularly nice and helpful. Overall, the accommodation suited its purpose and was good value for money in a great location. They were particularly helpful at giving us access to the staff toilet on level 4 when required as we had 4 people in our unit. The unit was very quiet. Great friendly front desk staff.

“A good brand name apartment with a below-average property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We have stayed here many times within a few years, and totally love the location. We see degradation of the property as the years pass, and it is recommended that the apartment go through a renovation to keep up with times.

Service: The reception closes after 7pm on most days, but provides excellent service when they are in office. The chambermaid we had, gave a sour face each time we tell her to come back later.

Comfort: The beds are great, although we couldn't close the bedroom door as the bed was too big for the room. Also, as the walls are extremely thin, we could hear yelling kids and conversations from next door. 4 people sharing 1 toilet in a 2-bedroom apartment is a tad too much for us to bear, especially when we were all rushing to get ready. The bathroom is very basic and not tastefully designed at all.

Facilities and Amenities: The washing machine is not placed within the apartment unless you book the penthouse. And only the 1st to 3rd floors have shared laundry room, so it was extremely difficult for us to get to use it as we were staying on a higher floor.

“Don't stay here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I really wish I had read Tripadvisor before I stayed here. The room was terrible! There were stains on the carpet, stains on the couch, thick mould behind the sink and shower, and a big build up of dust in the bathroom. Even the toilet was filthy!
I passed my feedback on to guest relations, who assured me that their housekeeping practices would be reviewed, however from recent reviews it appears that nothing has changed.

“Good location, but very noisy and out of date.”

We stayed in Melbourne for 4 nights (with 3 kids). First we stayed in Somerset on Elizabeth, but after 2 (false) fire alarms we transferred to Somerset on Gordon Heights. Location is great with Great asian restaurants around the corner and trams are at the doorstep. The place however looks old fashioned and furniture was dirty. The bad experience came at night when there was a party ongoing in adjecent room. The walls seems to be made of paper and we couldn't sleep untill the party ended at 3am. No contol on the amount of people ment there were a lot of drunk people in the room throwing stuff around. No, we will never return to Somerset in Melbourne. This and Somerset on Elizabeth street are on the lower end of the Ascott quality spectrum.

Room Tip: rooms on level-5 have a balcony

“Good location - but that's it's best feature”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

Have just returned from a short (4 night) stay in Melbourne with my husband and two kids. The location of Somerset Gordon Heights is fantastic - Chinatown on your doorstep, short walk for Christmas shopping at Myer and David Jones, tram stop just around the corner - but that's about the best thing it has going for it.
We stayed in what was supposed to be a 2 bedroom 'executive' apartment. Not sure what was executive about it - the fact that there was one lone frying pan in the kitchen (we had to ask for another saucepan to cook some pasta), one of those pathetic hairdryers on the wall that goes on one speed and heat (i.e. slow and damn hot) or the view of the brick wall. This place markets itself as suitable for long term accommodation for those relocating - yeah right!
That aside, the beds were comfortable (although housekeeping and their ability to make the beds was dubious - I think they only 'make' the part of the bed they can actually see) and the apartment was enough for our short stay, especially as we spent most of the day out and about.
Would I stay there again? Maybe. If the price was right. And there was nowhere else!
