“Great place to stay, friendly, helpful, professional staff. Absolutely fantastic if you have pets”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

We arrived and were greeted by very helpful and friendly staff. They had our room ready and gave us plenty of helpful advice regarding the area including but not limited to the shops, transport, and dinning.

The rooms are neat and tidy, the cleaner must work very hard, they do ask you if you would like to tip the cleaning staff, but it is totally optional and a very well written note will tell you this. We did because they were just so efficient and fast not like the usual hotel when you return to your room and have to wait for the cleaning staff, here they wait for you to leave and they are done before you return. Given that pets are allowed I don't know how they do it, our room was smell and fur free. Further the rooms are well decorated and homely, the couches are new and comfortable to sleep on as they fold out to be extra beds. The tv has foxtel channels and there is also a dvd player, you can hire dvd's from the front desk (very handy).

The front garden was really nice and there is a little area you can sit down a relax in the back. The car park sizes are reasonable unless you own a Hummer.

The tram stops approximately 1 minute (walk) from the apartments and doesn't take long to drop you off in the centre of Melbourne. The staff can call you a taxi or you can call and they were always very quick at attending the apartment.

Thank you for making our stay fantastic, I will definitely stay here again!!

“It's plain bad manners to ask for a tip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2011

Although Birches is a renovated 70's style apartment block, the decor of the rooms is pleasant enough. They are, however, quite small. A "one bedroom apartment" is more of a small studio: there is a dividing wall, but no door between sleeping and living areas. A surcharge is added for extra guests sleeping on sofa beds. The sofas in our room were, however, uncomfortable to sleep on. You were essentially lying on a leather platform, difficult to fit sheets to. An uncomfortable metal bar running down the middle meant that you had to confine yourself to half. There was a very faint, but not problematic, smell of cigarette smoke in the room.

Although staff were friendly, extra charges meant the place seemed to have a meanness about it. Parking in the extraordinarily tight spaces was an extra $10 a night. Borrowing a DVD from the front desk seemed to have a charge of $6.

Utterly appalling was the typed, laminated note left in our (and, I presume, every) room with the barefaced request: "(The maid) has serviced your apartment during your stay, a small token of appreciation would be greatly appreciated" followed by a clip art picture of a piggy bank. The management should know that gratuities for housekeeping are not the done thing in Australia. They should realise that we have no need to adopt this dubious American custom. Increasing the wages of maids rather than relying on the fluctuating generosity of guests guarantees the secure income they deserve. And then there's this indisputable fact they seem to have forgotten: it's just plain bad manners to ask for a tip.

The location, however, was reasonably good. The Melbourne CBD was a longish, but achievable walk. Frequent trams stop a block away on Victoria Pde. North Richmond, only slightly further, has a station, an Aldi and good value Vietnamese cuisine. The wealthy suburb of East Melbourne contains pleasant examples of Victorian Architecture.

Birches Serviced Apartments are one of the most popular Serviced Apartments in East Melbourne. We pride ourselves on great value and customer service with a relaxed atmosphere.

My staff play a large, integral part of the business and to encourage them with incentives to help themselves and in return this reflects on the business. Housekeeping is one of the hardest positions physically in the Hospitality Industry. It was my idea to introduce
a small container to sit on the bench and if guests wished to put a small token of appreciation
in the container then they had that choice. There is NO obligation and the word “Maid” has certainly not been used. I have been in the hospitality business for over 20 years and I haven’t used that term for many, many years. This practice is in no way meant to offend anyone, in fact its only to help the guest have better service and encourage my hard working house-keeping team to give it. This to me this makes sense.

Like all Hotels and Serviced Apartments, we are a business and charging $10 for SECURE onsite car-parking within the CBD area and $6 for a DVD is very reasonable.

“The ultimate place to stay when travelling with your pets!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2011

I have stayed a number of times now with Birches in East Melbourne and I continue to chose them as my accommodation preference when I am travelling with my pet. The Apartments are older, but comfortable. The friendliness of the staff makes us feel welcome each time. Conveniently located on a tram line which takes you into the CBD in a matter of minutes. The BBQ was a great place to relax outside our apartment as there are no balconies.

“Clean and presentable budget apartments serviced by friendly and helpful staff. Excellent location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

Perfect apartments for a short or long stay in Melbourne - very close to MCG and CBD. Tram 109 takes you straight to the free City Circle route!
Apartments are simple but comfortable and the place is immaculately maintained. Best of all, the staff were friendly and very helpful.
We've booked our return stay already!

“Excellent Service & Friendliness Means we'll certainly be back to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

Coming from a rural area and being very unsure about trams, trains & car travel, we learned all we needed to know from the very helpful & friendly staff. Nothing was too much for them and being an extra busy time for them due to a lot happening in Melbourne, the staff always made time to attend to our never ending questions and when we encountered a problem, they were there to suggest and offer ways to solve it... A lovely spot, within walking/tram distance of most major attractions .A huge thank you from a very grateful and appreciative family...

Thank you for your review. We always appreciate recognition of our staff, as it is the first impression that guests have of the property and it is the one that remains with them long after they have left us. We look forward to being able to welcome you and your family back to Birches soon.
