I booked a "spacious, one bedroom apartment" over the internet , based on it's images, location (near St Vincent's hospital) and price. On opening the door, there was a strong smell, a bit like paint, but not quite - hard to describe. That remained for the length of our stay, regardless of how many windows (no flywire) were opened.
I was disappointed to find it much smaller than the website images showed (probably the angle of the camera) with no door between the lounge and bedroom, making it more of a studio apartment.
The 'wall' was just a pillar at the end of 2 cupboards that didn't reach the ceiling. One wall light above the bed was hanging half off it's fitting and the step-up shower in the bathroom had a mouldy nylon curtain to replace the glass door, which had obviously been broken and removed, leaving one fixed panel.
The kitchenette had a grease ring on the sink from the previous tenant and the cooking utensils were very basic. The frypan was buckled with the non-stick coating mostly worn off. The sink counter sloped down to the wall in the back, so any splashed water collected in the corner of the bench. The benchtop was siliconed to the wall all around. The kickboard under the fridge was rotting away, so I'm guessing the funny smell may have been mould.
Overall impression was of old building tarted up with a quick coat of paint and a couple of new fittings. Although it was tidy, I wouldn't have called it clean.
When we went to bed the first night my husband turned on the bedside light and it expired with a bang, shorting out both lights, plus the radio and the power points beside the bed, making the radio/alarm unusable and leaving us with no reading light. The staff had already left for the night so we were unable to report it. When I pulled back the bedclothes to get in, I found a brown pubic hair on my side of the bed, so the sheets hadn't been changed.
The bed was comfortable.
At 2.30am we were woken by a loud intermittent beeping from the smoke alarm in the corridor outside. Remembering the light, I leapt out of bed, thinking the wiring had caught fire in the wall. On discovering no smoke, I rang the emergency contact number I found in the room folder, and was told "just climb on a chair and pull the battery out and hand it in to reception in the morning". I'm 63 yeard old with degenerative disease of hips and back - my husband was unable to climb due to a tumour in his left leg (hence the hospital visit) so this made things difficult.
I managed to clamber up and grab the alarm and took it straight down to reception and left it outside the locked door, still beeping.
Later that morning, as we left for the hospital, I called in to the front desk and was assured that the maintenance man would be coming to fix it "today".
When I arrived back at 7pm I was told he'd be coming "tomorrow". Ditto the next day.
The day before we were due to leave, I was offered another room, but I couldn't face moving all the gear for just one more night.
No -one came to fix the light during the 4 day stay and when I complained I was given a $20 discount.
All the staff were most polite but the desk staff were not knowledgable about basic things like STD phone call charges. Local calls were 75 cents but I wanted to make several STD calls to family re: my husband's operation. The desk clerk was "not sure" about the charges other than local calls - which were already noted in the room folder - and did not offer to find out.
Overall, a very disappointing experience. The staff were polite enough and smiled a lot, but not particularly helpful.
For anyone travelling to the city from the country, especially for hospital visits or treatment, this apartment is well located but I would not recomment it on any other grounds. For the same price, you can get better accomodation next door!
