I added Melbourne very late on to the list of places that I wanted to see whilst in Australia but really glad I did. And when I was looking through accommodation before going I stumbled upon this little beauty. Centrally located in the city within walking distance of just about anywhere in the city centre. I was very unsure about sharing a room with four other people at first but having done it now, I look back with great fondness.

They couldnt have put me with a nicer group of people, maybe it was just luck. The rooms had two bunk beds which considering they were used each night, they were very comfortable, the rooms were very clean, the bathroom areas were very private I would say and on the whole clean, although there were times when the people staying there left it like pigs. Not the hotels fault.

The staff at the front desk were really friendly, all smiles and as helpful as could be expected. They have internet access, but I didn't use it as I thought it was a tad bit expensive and there is a restaurant which is alongside the hotel and they have special rates for hotel visitors which is useful when travelling on a budget.

I like the fact that they take things serious where anyone making a nuisance of themselves or disturbing the peace goes.

It is a great stop when visiting Melbourne. I was happy with it and I'm not always a person to please, especially when it comes to sharing rooms with strangers. It has changed my view.

The place just underwent renovation when we stayed there. It was quite clean and well-maintained at that time. Beds and rooms were in good condition. There are also new LCD TVs in each room. Shower rooms are a bit on the bad side as it smells sometimes. Nevertheless, hot showers are always in supply and paper rolls never runs out.( Trust me, you'll need tonnes of paper rolls for wiping of the wet toilet bowl). There's a gym and a little theatre room which is quite a delight for all. Staff are friendly and really helpful. I would recommend this to travelers traveling on a budget.

I think Space Hotel would like to think it can be more than OK backpacker accommodation -- it's got a LONG way to go. My family and I "upgraded" to the family room with ensuite. My main impressions: dirty bedspread; dirty toilet (permanently stained or just not cleaned); mouldy shower; no plug for the basin; airconditioning that you can't adjust -- it's either on or off; airconditioning only works for one half of the L-shaped room; TV that is behind the wardrobe (wtf?) so you have to sit on the end of the bed and look to your left to watch it; main bed too big for the room so you cant walk around it.
Finally, the hotel's fire alarm went off at about 6 am, with recorded announcements that it was not a drill -- no problem, the family threw on clothes and headed for the fire escape. (Note to owners and fire inspectors: an exit sign printed on the hotel laser printer can be read in daylight, but won't help people escaping from a fire at night). We reach street level and walk around to reception, where the guy behind the front desk said that the alarm was caused by someone using their deoderent. No further explanation, no apology.
Only stay here if you're desperate.

Overall I wouldn't this recommend this hotel to anyone. We were paying $150 per night which didn't include your own en-suite. The bathroom/showers were a disgrace. They were all in one so that being shower and toilet. The shower had no screens so most times if you just needed to go to the toilet there was water everywhere. They also have a problem with water proofing so all the bathrooms smelt terrible! Cold showers are also common. Never had a hot shower there. The other thing was that you needed to supply a $20 bond for the use of cutlery. I believe that is to much of a deposit.
