The good things about this hostel is the location, that's it's cheap and that it's breakfast included in the price. But it's not worth it. I'm happy that we just stayed there for two nights. I would have prefered just one.
The hallways are SOOO dirty and the bath rooms are very thorn down, SMALL, and not to clean...
The rooms are not very nice and not to clean.
The bedlinen were actually clean wich was a reliefing surprise in this hostel.

Some of the guys in the staff was ok, but a few of them were really grumpy.

And also -don't come here if you travel with suitcases, there are sooo many stairs!

Stayed for 4 nights recently. Basic hotel, but great location, friendly staff. Great value for the the money they charge per room.

11 Years ago I spent some time here as a backpacker, had a really good time. The hostel was even mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide 2000, but not anymore in the version of 2011. Still I decided to return with my husband. Location is excellent, staff very friendly and helpful. But I was shocked by the state the hostel was in. The same dirty carpets on the stairs and in the hallway with puke stains, and it smells of yeast throughout the communal areas, really disgusting. When I mentioned this sorry state to the staff, they said it's a long process to convince the owner to do some serious DIY. Room was clean, except for the curtains: hanging loose, and dirty. Bed was nice and clean. After the first shock we had a great time, but well, the old lady Exford needs some serious TLC. It was good to be back, but next time we'll book a well-maintained hostel/hotel. Hopefully the hostel will be back in the Lonely Planet guide of 2012/2013 as a well-maintained budget option at an excellent location with (same) friendly staff.

The hostel is on top of a pub in the middle of the china town section of the Melbourne city. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and secure. Plenty to see and do in the local area as it is in the heart of the city.
