We stayed recently on a Sunday night and paid $130 for two people, bed and breakfast, booking directly through the hotel's website. I asked for a quiet room on an upper floor and we were given room 1017 - as the number suggests, on the 10th floor, with the bonus of being well away from the lift. We had a lovely view, taking in glimpses of the river, Federation Square and the Melbourne Arts Centre spire in between the city buildings.
The room was better than I had expected from the website - the decor was more stylish than I had thought it might be. The room was spacious with a comfortable bed, sofa, table and chairs etc and the kitchenette would have been handy if we'd be staying more than one night. As it was, we ate dinner out on Southbank - a nice, easy choice on a rainy night.
Foxtel channels were available however the choice was quite limited (but we weren't there to watch TV). The only other small thing I'd mention is that although the kitchenette was simply equipped, there were no wine glasses - but there was a corkscrew! Glass tumblers did the trick, but I don't think that they did our wine justice. Not a big deal - I wouldn't expect wine glasses in a hotel normally, but when there are cooking facilities, well, I suppose I would.
We parked at the Southgate car park under the Langham diagonally opposite and had our ticket validated by the reception desk, which brought the total paid for overnight parking to $12. As NRMA members (NSW motoring organisation), we were offered the choice when we checked in between a late checkout, 5% discount on the room rate or one free breakfast. Staff were uniformly friendly and professional.
Breakfast was buffet style and plentiful, although some of the items weren't quite as hot as they might have been by the time we came down - we had allowed ourselves the luxury of a lie-in and reached the breakfast room at about 9am. The coffee machine was excellent! Generally though, I'd not bother with breakfast next time but pay a cheaper rate and head out into the city to one of the many great cafes instead.
Overall, we thought that the Southbank Travelodge offered accommodation with a good price/quality ratio in a convenient location, and we'd be happy to stay there again.
