I have stayed at the Grand Hotel each January (for Aus Open) for the past 5 years. I understand the comments of others about the bathrooms being a little tired, there are sometimes chipped tiles etc. I keep going back to the Grand as the location is perfect for access to trams to Melbourne Park, City Circle trams and full sized Supermarket close by. It's nice (and unusual) to see the some of the same staff year after year at a hotel. The pool area is great and the food is faultless, both room service & restaurant. As I travel with my now 9y.o. son it’s handy to have the loft bedroom so he can go to sleep but not feel completely isolated. The rooms are a great size with really comfortable beds and the kitchen is adequately equipped with a decent sized refrigerator which gives flexibility with meals. Accommodation costs in Melbourne during the Aus Open are exorbitant but the Grand is still priced reasonably. The Grand may not be right for everyone but for my needs it’s ideal, I’m looking forward to heading back next year.
Beautiful old hotel! Only negative feedback would be that there was noone to greet you at the front to help with bags. The staff are pleasant but somewhat seem as though they don't want to be there! No eye contact and not a lot of smiles either.
It is central and it's a beautiful hotel. There is only the one lift and there is a short wall (with your bags) if your room is at the other end of the corridor (lifts are situated at one end).
The room itself was lovely, big beautiful bed that looks like a giant cloud. Bathroom is ok, nothing amazing. We had to leave the door open when having a shower as there was no fan to help with the steam! No big deal though.
This Hotel is located close to Southbank, easy stroll into the city shops and close to Docklands.
It is a beautiful old building, huge rooms ( we actually had a small suite ) that are all separate from eachother. Kitchen upon entrance, up a few steps to lounge area then the bedroom up in the loft, cute!
The bathroom is quite small but ok, the bedroom is of a good size but the main feature of this hotel is the beds. The Doona and pillows are like floating in clouds and the bed is amazingly comfortable.
We ordered room service for Dinner and it was cold and overcooked. We also asked for a certain red wine that was out of stock but then was recommended another wine which was all good untill we went to pay the bill the next day only to find that the wine was double the price of what we originally asked for at $85.00 a bottle, not happy !!!
Breakfast is ordered of the menu ( no buffet ) which is ok, but unless it is included in the price I would recommend going over to Southbank and eating there, better breakfasts and great views.
The Yarra track is there for those who want to run or walk, or even around the Tan ( where everyone goes to keep fit )
Tea/ coffee provided ( nescafe machine )
Front desk service is very good and helpful
The last time I stayed at The Grand Hotel I didn't give it the best review on TripAdvisor. I stayed there again due to its proximity to the conference and exhibition centre. The service this time was much more friendly and attentive. I was given an upgrade to a suite which was HUGE for one person. The only grumble I had was that the lighting in the bathroom wasn't great for putting makeup on in the morning, but I could live with that. Breakfast - and meals generally - are a little slow to arrive. That doesn't worry me when I'm on holidays but I was on a business package special and just needed to allow time in the morning for it. Overall I had a much better stay and they made my work trip easier.
